Bellevue women’s basketball hosted the annual Bulldog Classic the weekend of Dec. 3-5 with visiting teams from Highline, Everett, Umpqua, Spokane, Mount Hood, Big Bend, and Green River, and ended up keeping the 2nd place trophy on home territory.
The Bulldogs’ first game matched them up against the Green River Gators Friday, Dec. 3. As in past weeks, it took Bellevue most of the first half to warm up, but once they did, their shooting from the field increased from 40% to 63%, and the points piled up. Freshmen A. C. DenHartog and Kelsey Sparks contributed 16 points each, with Teelin Gray good for 10 of her own. Final score in this match-up was Bellevue 73, GRCC 43.
Saturday, Bellevue’s opponent was Big Bend CC, a team from the perennially tough East Region, but the Bulldogs pulled out another victory with a final score of 72-55. Again, it was BC freshmen leading in double-digit scoring: Sanda Milovic, out of Kentwood, netted 15 points, and Auburn Riverside grad Taylor Wofford contributed 12.
Luck and energy ran out for Bellevue when they faced Spokane for the championship title on Sunday. Though the teams were closely matched, the Bulldogs ran out of steam in the second half, having held a 6-point lead going into halftime, Bellevue women were able to put only 27 points on the board against Spokane’s 36, giving the Sasquatch the 67-64 victory and first place. Leading the Bulldogs in scoring Sunday was sophomore Kelly Sutherland with her game-high 18 points. Wofford and Sparks contributed 15 and 10 each, respectively, while Brandy Johnson hauled in 10 rebounds for Bellevue.
Bellevue women have a rest during finals week, and will be hosting the Bellevue Crossover the weekend of Dec. 17-19. Complete schedule available at www.nwaacc.org
