This past week, the Bellevue College volleyball team competed in two league matches taking on Edmond October 25, followed by Olympic College on October 27. The Bulldogs then traveled to participate in the annual Dorian Harris Classic held at Mount Hood CC in Gresham, OR, October 29 and 30.
Hosting Edmonds at home, Bellevue took early control of the match winning game one by a score of 25-17. Throughout the match, freshman Brandy Johnson recorded 12 kills along with Alexa Lagazo’s nine to lead the offense. Sophomore Veronica Wetzel, as Bellevue’s primary setter, recorded a game high 33 assists. This marks the third time in the last six league matches that Wetzel has eclipsed the 30 assist mark.
Meanwhile on defense, Jessicca Weitman scored double digits in digs with 10. Gabby Garrido was second on the team, recording eight digs. As a team, the Bulldogs played great defense, evidenced by a total of 49 digs.
Edmonds then took game two 25-16. However, Bellevue put a stop to the Tritons comeback winning games three and four by scores of 25-22 and 25-18.
Bellevue took the court again two days later to face off against Olympic, also winning the match in four games. Johnson repeated her offensive performance with 12 kills. Hitter Lisa Schouten complemented with 13 kills of her own. Wetzel tied her season high in assists with 41. She recorded 41 earlier in the season on October 1, also against Olympic.
Kim Becker emerged for Bellevue in this match with a team high 14 digs on defense, while Dez Diego recorded one shy at 13 digs. The Bulldogs also recorded four blocks throughout the match. Bellevue won the match by scores of 25-10, 25-21, and 25-23.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the week in Gresham, but could not carry through their winning momentum, falling in matches against Highline, Clackamas, Chemeketa, and Columbia Basin College. The Bulldogs played competitively though, with three of the four tournament matches going to three games.
At the conclusion of the week, Bellevue’s league play record is now above .500 at 5-4. The team travels to Skagit Valley College on November 3 and Everett on November 5.
Hats off again to Bellevue student athletes Jessicca Weitman and Dez Diego who were selected North Region Volleyball Offensive and Defensive players of Week Seven!
