The 2006-07 season was the most successful on record for the BCC Women’s Basketball team, but the Bulldogs would have liked to win one more. Advancing to the Championship Game of the NWAACC Tournament, Bellevue fought hard, but simply didn’t have enough left in the tank to take down top ranked Lane Community College.
The championship game was the second time the Bulldogs and Titans had faced each other, having played in the title game of the BCC Crossover Tournament on December 17. The Bulldogs won the first contest 75-57 to hand Lane their first loss in 42 games. Sunday night, however, the Titans got a significant measure of revenge. Lane came out on fire, sprinting to an 8 point lead, and would never look back, taking a 35-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. Bellevue had one final rally left in their legs, knotting the game at 40-40 with 15:10 to play, but the run seemed to sap what energy the Bulldogs had left. Time and again the Titans were a little quicker to the ball, out-rebounding Bellevue 21-9 on the offensive glass, and scoring 18 second chance points. At the end of the night, Lane proved too tough inside and secured their second straight NWAACC Championship, 81-65. Tournament MVP Mercedes Alexander shared game high scoring honors with teammate Shelby Stevens, as both put up 24 points on the night. The Bulldogs were led by Luv Rattler’s (SO, Kentlake HS) 18 points, and Latrina Woods’ (FR, Meadowdale HS) 17.
En route to their first ever title game, BCC defeated Centralia College, Columbia Basin College, and Walla Walla Community College. As disappointing as the loss was for Bellevue, the 2006-07 Bulldogs have a legitimate case for having been the best women’s basketball team in BCC school history. The second place finish is the best ever for Bellevue in 13 NWAACC Tournament appearances, and the final 26-5 overall record is the best mark in the history of the program. Bulldog sophomores Rattler and Jenny DeYoung (Redmond HS) were both named to the All Tournament First Team, while freshman post Marissa Bower (Anacortes HS) was named to the All Tournament Second team.
