The Bellevue Community College Women’s Basketball team is off to the best start in its history, according to records obtained from the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. Head Coach Cheryl Sorenson and Assistant Coach Steve Lowe have their Bulldogs off and running with a 10-1 record, having beaten some of the top teams in the region. Among those to fall to BCC was Lane Community College on December 18th, last season’s NWAACC tournament champions, and winners of their previous 41 games (including an undefeated season in 2005-06). The Bulldogs’ lone defeat came at the hands of Yakima Valley Community College on December 21st, as a weary BCC team played their 4th game in 5 days.
Leading the Bulldogs in scoring is sophomore forward Jenny DeYoung (Redmond HS) at 11.8 points per game, while also snatching 4.9 rebounds per contest. Freshman post Marissa Bower (Anacortes HS) has also been on a tear, averaging nearly a double-double with 10.8 points and 9.0 rebounds. Sophomore guard Tanna Radtke (Redmond HS) is also off to a strong start (9.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists), as is freshman guard Latrina Woods (Meadowdale HS), averaging 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.9 steals per game.
Sorenson, who played under June Daugherty at the University of Washington, took over the BCC program during the summer of 2004. After struggling through a tough 4-21 inaugural season in which BCC struggled just to field a team, Coach Sorenson’s first recruiting class made an immediate impact. The Bulldogs finished the 2005-06 season with a 19-12 overall record, including an 11-5 mark in division play, good enough to win the Northern Division title for the first time in school history. That team went on to finish 7th at the NWAACC Championships in Pasco.
