Standards: Rules of the Road

Web Standards are the rules of the road for college website managers and application developers.

Content Requirements

Specific content requirements for each type of website has been established to assure that public information is accurate, easy to navigate, presents a clear identity (look and feel) belonging to BCC, and provides clear contact information for site visitors. All website managers are expected to maintain pages that comply with the following standards:

  1. Official Websites
    1. The following elements must appear on the home page:
      • College name and logo (following current logo guidelines for web pages).
      • A link to the BCC home page (http://bellevuecollege.edu )
      • The name of the website stated clearly.
      • Contact information for the website manager or a clearly visible link leading the site visitor to the website manager contact information.
      • The date when the website was last updated or revised.
    2. The following element must be included in all pages:
      • A clear page title (HTML Title tag) that identifies the web page and the name of the college.  For example: “Business Division, Bellevue Community College” or “Contact the Business Division - BCC”
    3. All pages and files stored in web server folders must provide current and/or accurate information.   
    4. Pages may not contain commercial sponsorships or advertisements unless approved by the Vice President of Administrative Services (see BCC Policy #5450: “Web Advertisements or Sponsorships”).
    5. Pages may not contain degree requirements or course descriptions on their website without prior approval from the Curriculum Information Management (CIM) Subcommittee or the Executive Dean of Instruction or his/her designee.
  2. Affiliate Organization Websites
    1. The following information will appear on the home page of all affiliate websites:
      • A link to the BCC home page (http://bellevuecollege.edu).
      • The name (clearly identified) of the website.
      • The contact information for the website manager or a clear link to the persons’ contact information.
      • The date when the website was last updated or revised.
      • A statement explaining affiliation with Bellevue Community College and purpose of the organization. For example,"[Organization name] is co-sponsored by Bellevue Community College, and is partially funded by [list other sponsors]."
    2. A BCC logo may appear on an affiliate organization website, but is not required. The BCC logo must be used appropriately.
    3. Pages may not contain commercial sponsorships or advertisements unless approved by the Vice President of Administrative Services (see BCC Policy #5450: “Web Advertisements or Sponsorships”).
  3. Personal Websites
    1. The following information must appear on the home page of all personal websites:
      • A link to the BCC home page (http://bellevuecollege.edu).
      • The name and e-mail address of the page owner
      • The date the website was last updated or revised
      • A content disclaimer explaining the website does not represent the views of the college. For example, “This is a personal website and does not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of Bellevue Community College.”
    2. Personal websites will not contain the BCC logo or other symbols or marks of the college.
    3. Individuals are required to comply with relevant BCC policies, state and federal law, and any relevant licensing agreements relating to intellectual property.
    4. Pages may not contain commercial sponsorships or advertisements unless approved by the Vice President of Administrative Services (see BCC Policy #5450: “Web Advertisements or Sponsorships”).
  4. Student Organization Websites
    1. The following required elements must appear on the home page of all student club websites:
      • The name of the student club.
      • The name and e-mail address of the student website manager.
      • The name and BCC e-mail of the club’s faculty advisor.
      • A content disclaimer explaining the website does not represent the views of the college. For example, “This is a BCC student [club or organization] website and does not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of Bellevue Community College.”
    2. Student Club websites will not contain the BCC logo or other symbols or marks of the college.
  5. Streaming Audio/Video
    1. If an individual needs to post streaming audio or video on an approved BCC website the capability of doing so will be requested using the RealServer Video/Audio Streaming Website Request Form (in MyBCC).
