Mission: To create a responsive and committed environment that guides all new students through the transition into college and supports both strong academic performance and social prosperity at BCC.

Philosophy: The peer to peer mentoring program aims to bring the diverse cultures of BCC together in a collaborative effort to improve and enhance all students' academic and social success.

Goals

  • To establish a group of students, faculty and staff who volunteer to support and guide new students through the college experience.
  • To retain students at BCC until graduation or transfer to an institution of higher education.
  • To connect students with the proper resources and materials on campus in order to ensure that students are academically successful.
  • To foster positive mentoring relationships and help new students get connected on campus.

Activities

  • Have a group of student ambassadors who staff a drop-in center where mentees can come and get questions answered.
  • Have faculty and staff who will support the mentors with monthly meetings.
  • Have a mentor table in the cafeteria where students can ask questions.
  • Mentors have lunch with mentees.
  • Mentors inform mentees about upcoming campus events & have sign-up sheets for the events as well as coordinate own events.

  • Attend to concerns provide support.
  • Direct to college resources.
  • Encourage interaction with BCC's diverse community.
  • Create connections between students.

What is a Peer Mentor?

A mentor is an experienced and successful student who wants to help other students learn to make the most out of their academic career. Peer Mentors serve as role models in the areas of academic achievement, campus involvement, and leadership in order to help first-year students make a successful transition into college life.

What is the Purpose of the Peer Mentor Program?

The peer mentoring program connects our first year students with successful continuing students with whom they are likely to identify. By providing social support in a friendly environment, peer mentors help first year students with their transition to the university, make them feel at home in the academic environment, and enhance their college experience.

How are Peer Mentors Trained?

Through training, group activities, and interacting with the students in the learning communities, Mentors will gain knowledge, experience, and self-confidence. Additionally, Mentors gain valuable leadership experience, develop close working relationships with faculty and staff, and become event better students themselves.

What can a Peer Mentor do for me?

Help transition to BCC; Act as an experienced guide to college life; Offer support to your academic interests or during times of academic difficulty; Assist you in creating good time management skills, study skills, communication skills; Introduce you to fun things to do on campus; Provide a chance for you to meet other students; Refer you to various learning support systems on campus

What is a Mentee?

A mentee is a student who asks questions and looks for guidance from the mentors of the mentor program.

What are the benefits of being a mentee?

Mentees develop a support system on campus, develop relationships with other students and faculty, learn how to navigate the academic system and find resources on campus. In general students who participate in mentor programs are more academically successful and involved in college life than those who do not.

Who is qualified to be a mentee?

The peer-to-peer mentor program is open to all students. New students will benefit the most from the resources.

How do I sign up?

If you are interested in being a mentor please click on application fill it out and submit the application to the Student Programs office. If you’re interested in being a mentee contact us at mentorprogram@bcc.ctc.edu or 425-564-5718 with any inquiries, or just stop by Student Programs C212, second floor of the C building.
