Presents an introduction to Leadership
COURSE OVERVIEW AND GOALS:
Chester Barnard, The Functions of the Executive, states there are three basic classifications of leadership: communication, human resources, and vision. This course offers the theory and real-life applications of all three. Desna Wallin in the Community College Journal, February/March 2004 states, "Well-planned and executed short-term leadership development programs can help to prepare insightful new leaders." And, Max De Pree states, "The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two, the leader must become a servant…" (De Pree, 1989).
The following topics will be covered: fundamentals and assessment of leadership principles, skills, styles; ethical decision making; communication styles; conflict resolution; team building and motivation; and, how to effectively run a meeting.
Note: This course will utilize instruction, group work, readings, in-class guest speakers, group discussion, and class projects.
