Developmental Education

DEVED 061/062/      Strategies for Learning
ENGL 080       English: Reading & Writing and Reading Lab

This 11-or-12-credit combined course prepares English-as-a-Second-Language students for credit courses by building reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and writing skills. Students participate in writing work which coordinates with reading, speaking and listening activities. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment. Fee: $18.80 computer use.

ESL

The English as a Second Language classes are designed for immigrants, refugees, permanent residents, and U.S. citizens. People on student or tourist visas are not eligible and should contact International Student Programs at (425) 564-2341.

These classes have a $25 tuition charge per student per quarter with a waiver for students who cannot pay. Enrollment is continuous: If a student drops out, the opening is filled from a waiting list. Come to R230 or call (425) 564-2341 for more information.

Job Preparedness

For beginning/intermediate level English speakers. Intensive practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing helps students prepare for work.

Writing for a Newspaper

This class prepares English-as-a-Second Language students for credit courses and other purposes by building writing, editing, reading, research and computer skills in order to participate in a real business, the publication of a literacy newspaper.

English Language Institute

The English Language Institute offers English language training for all non-native speakers of English, including immigrants, refugees, permanent residents, U.S. citizens, and foreign nationals holding all types of visas. You can register for the following classes by phone, online at by phone or on campus with International Student Programs in House 6. Payment is due at the time of registration. For additional information about our programs or to register, please call (425) 564-3185. Books and other classroom materials can be purchased at the BCC Bookstore. English Language Institute classes meet April 2-June 12. Classes do not meet on April 23, May 8 and May 25.
