Brief Description

The Information Systems degree includes specialties in technology concentrations such as software development, database administration or business intelligence along with general education courses. Designed for entry-level developer/analyst positions.

Learning Outcomes

Degree recipients should possess the skills and abilities described below:

Programming Track:

  • Write, compile, debug and execute well engineered and maintainable programs using .NET compliant programming languages that effectively meet the requirements for Web and/or Windows applications
  • Explain and apply the principles of SQL programming
  • Explain and apply the necessary processes, tools and skills used in the systems analysis and system design phases of a project
  • Create and utilize relational databases, including modeling data, developing queries, customizing forms and reports, using code, creating charts and working with graphics
  • Communicate effectively in the three areas of listening, writing and speaking

DBA Track:

  • Describe the role of a Database Administrator (DBA) for a “high end” relational database implementation
  • Install and configure a new instance of a database server
  • Create a new database and configure database files
  • Describe, create and maintain database objects including tables, views, indexes, defaults, rules and constraints
  • Design and implement a security plan for a database server including users, groups, roles and permissions
  • Design and implement a database backup and recovery plan based on a stated business scenario
  • Develop a database maintenance plan involving operators, jobs and alerts
  • Design and implement an appropriate replication plan based on a stated business scenario
  • Monitor database server performance and tune the server as required
  • Create stored procedures, triggers and cursors using an appropriate database server programming language
  • Design and execute complex Structured Query Language (SQL) queries
