OLS Assessment Design

OLS uses a grading system that measures performance indicators directly related to 21st Century Skills and Bellevue College approved course outcomes. All courses for OLS are graded Pass/Fail. During the quarter, instructors collect data on the performance indicators and course outcomes, and when necessary, create individualized detailed plans to facilitate student success. At least 70% of the performance indicators and 70% of the course outcomes for each course are required to be met to receive a passing grade (P). Because the performance indicators are measured in every course, students are consistently working toward well-defined familiar goals.
Performance reviews are held midway through the quarter. Students self-assess and set goals in a one-on-one formal review with each course instructor. Final assessments summarize collected data for performance indicators and course outcomes and include an instructor narrative of student performance in the course. Direct feedback gives the student specific information that outlines the path to improved performance in succeeding courses. Such repetition is critical for students to learn and maintain the skills needed to be successful in life and work after OLS.
