BCC honor society students earn top regional awards

BELLEVUE -- Bellevue Community College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa international honor society, and chapter member Jessica Buskirk, of Bellevue, earned top awards at the society's regional conference, held March 7-9 on the Clark College campus in Vancouver, Wash.

Phi Theta Kappa chapters and members representing 52 colleges from Washington, Alaska, Northern Idaho, Montana and western Canada competed for the awards.

Buskirk won the Literary Achievement Award for her poem, "Untitled," on the society's honors-study theme for the year, "Gold, Gods & Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power."

The BCC chapter as a whole won the Leadership Hallmark Award, which recognizes superior academic programs, and was also named a Five-Star Chapter, officially placing it among region's best.

BCC's chapter was also named second runner-up for the Distinguished Chapter Award, and its "Project Ecotronics, through which students are collecting used electronic items for safe recycling, was named runner-up for the Regional Service Project Award.

Officers in BCC's Phi Theta Kappa chapter this year include Nazila Dabestani, of Bellevue, president; Jessica Buskirk, Bellevue, communications officer; Sean Nelson, of Redmond, vice president of fellowship; and Tristin Glennon, of Issaquah, vice president of service.

Chapter member Andrea Williams, of Redmond, serves as vice president of the society's Greater Northwest Region.
