BCC students tied for 1st, 4th place in
national math competition first-round results

Team tied for 2nd

BELLEVUE, WASH. – Two Bellevue Community College students are tied for first and fourth places nationally, and the BCC team as a whole is tied for second, after the first round of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges’ annual Student Math League competition.

About 10,000 students from 180 colleges across the U.S. participate each year in the two-round competition.

In individual results, Qiaochu Yuan, of Bellevue, tied for first in the nation with  students from Pasadena (Calif.) City College and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (Richmond, Va.).

Amy Kim, of Redmond, tied for fourth with students from Santa Monica (Calif.) Community College and Lone Star Community College (North Harris, Tex.).

Yuan and Kim also placed first and second, respectively, in the Northwest Region, which includes Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

Brandon Ludahl, of Bellevue, tied for third in the region with students from Edmonds and Portland community colleges.

BCC students Ian Bush, of Bothell, and Shu-Lun Liu, of Seattle’s International District, also ranked highly in the region, tied for 9th and 17th places, respectively.

The BCC team as a whole trailed only Pasadena City College in nationwide standings and placed first in the Northwest Region.

BCC’s math teams have finished in the top ten nationally 10 times since 1997 in the annual AMATYC competition.

The first-round test, administered last fall, drew 130 students. An even larger number is expected to take the second and final exam this winter.

The top five scorers on the test make up the college’s team.
