BCC student wins national Leader of Promise scholarship
BELLEVUE, WASH.– Bellevue Community College student Ignace Hounwanou, a Bellevue resident from Togo, has been awarded a $1,000 Leader of Promise scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa international honor society. He was one of only 30 students nationwide to receive that honor, which is based on academic success and significant community service.
Hounwanou’s ultimate goal is to become a registered nurse, specializing in public health, and take his training back to his home country to help others.
“There is a lack of medical professionals in Togo and they are very needed there,” says Hounwanou.
Hounwanou recently completed two years at BCC in preparation to pursue BCC’s Associate of Arts in Nursing degree, which he began working on in January 2008. After graduating from that program in 2009, he plans to attend the University of Washington to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Hounwanou serves on BCC’s Campus Activities Board and last year helped produce the college’s annual multicultural fair. He is also active in BCC’s International Student Association, Rotaract Club, Peer-to-Peer mentoring program, Campus Activities Board and French Club, which he helped found.
Hounwanou is also an active volunteer off campus. Overlake Hospital recently honored him as an outstanding volunteer at the hospital’s annual volunteer recognition luncheon.
