BCC expands learning opportunities into China
with new sister college, Shanghai Business School

BELLEVUE, WASH. – Bellevue Community College (BCC) last week signed a sister-school agreement with Shanghai Business School, the first such relationship for BCC in China and the Shanghai school’s first in the U.S.

As sister institutions the schools will exchange students and faculty to learn more about each other’s business culture, educational practices and language.

Shanghai Business School, for example, is studying BCC’s business transfer program, through which 1,000 students each year pursue freshman- and sophomore-level study prior to completing a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution, most frequently the University of Washington in Seattle and UW-Bothell.

The Shanghai school will also learn about BCC’s alliances with industry leaders such as Microsoft Corporation and The Boeing Company.

Similarly, BCC expects to benefit by exchanging students and faculty to enrich the learning opportunities and resources not only for those who travel to China but also for students in Bellevue.

Students of both nations will also work together to learn each other’s language.

“Our students have had excellent experiences in China on international business study trips and performing arts tours. Now, however, we anticipate developing more in-depth and ongoing learning opportunities, which are essential because China is not only a nation of rising economic power, but also one of our state’s major international trading partner,” said BCC President Jean Floten, who signed the agreement with leaders of the Shanghai Business School at ceremonies on the BCC campus November 7. “We are honored by this new relationship with Shanghai Business School and look forward to welcoming their students and faculty to our campus.”

The new sister school in Shanghai joins six others that BCC already has in Japan, South Korea and Mexico.

Located in the port city of Shanghai, a major economic, financial, trade and transportation center, Shanghai Business School ranks 39th among Chinese business schools and draws 11,000 students from all over China each year.

On six campuses and at 90 training centers, the school offers 15 bachelor’s degree programs and 46 three-year programs in business.

Shanghai Business School owns one of China’s best student job placement records, with graduates finding careers at Starbucks and Microsoft.

Serving 35,000 students annually, Bellevue Community College is Washington state’s third largest educational institution.

BCC offers educational programs in five general categories: a Bachelor of Applied Science in Radiation and Imaging Sciences; transfer study (the first two years of a bachelor’s degree) in more than 50 interest areas; work-related training through more than 90 degree and certificate programs in the fields of health care, information technology, business, interior design, education and public safety; adult basic education, including English language training; Continuing Education programs for adults in computing, job skills, art, travel, languages and personal enrichment; and contract training tailored for the workforces of individual employers.

BCC’s business transfer program is the largest single source of transfer students for University of Washington business programs.
