BCC student from Redmond wins Coca-Cola scholarship
BELLEVUE, WASH.– Bellevue Community College student Sergey Smirnov, a resident of Redmond and a 2005 graduate of Redmond High School, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation -- one of only 350 such scholarships awarded to two-year college students nationwide.
The award was based on Smirnov’s academic success and significant community service.
Smirnov is currently a member of Seattle Art Museum’s Contemporary Arts, Decorative Art, and American and Aboriginal Native Art councils, as well as the City of Redmond Arts Commission’s Visual Arts Committee.
He also has served in various volunteer capacities for St. Andrew’s Housing Group, the Redmond/Kirkland Relay For Life, the City of Redmond Adaptive Recreation Softball program and the Seattle Opera Guild.
At BCC Smirnov is student-government vice president of student affairs and pluralism, president of the Rotaract Club and vice president of Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
Last year he served on BCC’s Campus Activities Board and helped produce the college’s annual multicultural fair.
Other campus activities have included service as a Peer-to-Peer Mentor and a member of the college’s Tenure Review, Student Pluralism and Pluralism Steering committees.
Smirnov’s community service was honored last year when he was named the regional Outstanding Chapter Officer by Phi Theta Kappa, and in 2005 when he received the City of Redmond’s Youth Leadership Award.
Smirnov is working toward an associate degree at BCC, after which he intends to transfer to a university to pursue further study in higher education administration and speech communications.
