Identifying and Searching for Scholarly Journal Articles       Click here to go back Click here to go to the next page

A Word of Warning!!

Instructors often want you to find original, primary research articles. Scholarly journals contain original research and articles describing experiments, but also contain letters to the editor, forums, and book reviews, which are not evaluated as extensively.

Luckily for you, original research articles follow a standard format.
When you must use an original research article, look for articles divided into the following sections:

  1. Background: provides an overview of the topic.
  2. Method: details how the experiment was conducted.
  3. Results: shows the data that the researchers collected.
  4. Discussion: provides an interpretation of the results.
  5. References: lists other work read or considered during the research.
