Biology Handbook:
Concept Mapping Assignment

Read pages 11-16 in Life on the Internet.

There is a list of twelve scientists at the bottom of this page. You will be trying to draw a thread of connection between each scientist, no matter how thin or obscure it may be. You will illustrate these connections with a concept map. You must include in your concept map the reason(s) for each connection you make. To help you understand this project you should begin by searching the term "Concept Map" using some of the Internet search engines.

To find information on these scientists you will use the following resources:

Internet/ World Wide Web

Paper sources in the library e.g. books, newspapers, periodicals

Electronic sources in the library e.g. full text databases

You must use information from each of these resources. You cannot obtain all your information from one source e.g. World Wide Web. You should limit your use of encyclopedias (including Encarta) as a reference - these should be used as a starting point only.

You will turn in:

A typed paragraph on each scientist in the following list briefly describing their history and important discoveries. The sources of your information must be documented in a list of references. The reference should be formatted according to the attached guide.

Your concept map showing the interrelationships between all these people.

You will be working in groups of four on this assignment. Be sure to list the first and the last names of each person contributing to this project.

Francis Crick Stephen Jay Gould Rachel Carson
