RESEARCH ON A MATHEMATICIAN OR MATH RELATED TOPIC

The purpose of this assignment is to research one mathematical topic, or the life and significant contributions of one Mathematician, or the relationship of mathematics/trigonometry to science/nature/astronomy/music/etc.

1. The group should decide on a choice of topic for investigation and RECEIVE APPROVAL from your instructor before starting your actual research.

2. Your job is to research your topic using the LIBRARY, and its on-line resources in order to find at least three (3) scholarly references (books, academic journals) that could be checked out at the Library or printed out in their entirety.

You can also use the WEB using the search engines of your choice but the Web sites must be maintained by faculty at Universities or Mathematical/Science Associations. These sites will be in addition to the previous resources.

3. Since this is a group assignment you may want to assign to each a different on-line resource for your research.

A. RESEARCH DOCUMENTATION:

You will report the book and journal references using the MLA format (refer to the MLA handout from the LMC)--remember at least 3. If your periodical references are not available at the Library please attach a full text print-out to your research documentation.

For your WEB references also follow the approved MLA format for on-line references and be sure to include the correct URL. If I cannot access the site you will loose this reference.

B. POSTER PRESENTATION:

You will prepare a poster no larger than 2 feet by 3 feet giving the name of your topic and listing the important issues related to your topic so that someone unfamiliar about this topic could acquire some significant knowledge about your research. Make your poster attractive, colorful and informative.

Be prepared to give an oral presentation to explain the topic of your poster and to answer questions about your topic. Use about 10 minutes for your presentation and question/answer period.
