Name:
Name:

The purpose of this exercise is to give you practice in using EBSCOhost in the Library Media Center (LMC) system, then to compare it with the CD-rom indexes.

Procedure:

Click on the Netscape icon to open Netscape.

Type in the following: http://www.bcc.ctc.edu. This is the BCC Home Page. Click on LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER button in the left menu to connect to the BCC Library Media Center.

You can also get to the Library Media Center homepage directly by using: http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/lmc/.

NOW click on Periodical Articles. Then click on the EBSCOhost button.

Now you can search beyond and within the contents of the BCC Library by clicking on the CONTINUE button.

  1. Let us search for biographies of Mathematicians under a KEYWORD SEARCH so that we can compare these results with the ones from the CD-rom results. We can do this using Boolean operators. List all the search options that you can think of.

  2. Select the search option you think is best. Type it in and start your search

  3. Select another search option you think is good. Type it in and start your search

  4. If you are not satisfied with your search results the following technique might yield more results. Instead of typing Mathematician or Mathematicians completely type part of the word and then put a *. Try "Math* and Biog*".

  5. Now go back to the Mathematicians you selected and check if the periodicals listed are available in the BCC Library and find the location where you can find these periodicals in the Library.

    Periodical 1:

    Periodical 2:

If there is a book icon in the Full text column you may want to see the full text and print it out. Compare it with the actual article if the periodical is carried at BCC.

  6. DO YOU FEEL READY TO DO MORE SEARCHES?

Try one of your choice. Document it as outlined above.
