The purpose of this exercise is to give you practice in using Netscape to seach the LMC catalog for appropriate refence books, and to provide the proper citation for the books. The citation of the book describes the book so that someone else can look it up. It is used as a refrence. The bibliographic citation of a book includes the authors name, the title of the book, the name of the publisher, the date of publication, etc.
Procedure:
Click on the Netscape icon to open Netscape.
Type in the following: http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/ This is the BCC Home Page. On the left side of the screen, click on LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER to connect to the BCC Library Media Center.
You can also get to the Library Media Center homepage directly by using: http://ir.bcc.ctc.edu/library
NOW click on LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER CATALOG.Now you can search the contents of the BCC Library.
For this assignment we will use a Boolean Keyword search and also a Guided Keyword search so that you can compare the results of the search using these two techniques.
1. I want you to find the books/articles that are available in the BCC Library on the HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS OR TRIGONOMETRY. You will have to decide which words to use as your keywords and which Boolean operators to use for both searches.
A. BOOLEAN KEYWORD SEARCH: Click on Boolean Keyword.
a. Select the Keywords you will use and the Boolean operator. Type those in the box. Follow the instructions at the bottom of the screen. And now do your search. Report below the Keywords and Boolean operator chosen and the result of your search, that is the number of books/articles found.
NOTE: If your selection provided no results try something else until you are successful.
b. Now give the title of 3 books/articles you might want to check out.
c. Click on your best selection. .Give the name of the author, the title of the book or article, the name of the publisher or journal, the date of publication, the call number and the location where you can find it in the Library.
d. Do the same as in (c) above for your second selection.
B. GUIDED KEYWORD SEARCH: Click on Guided Keyword.
a. Select the Keywords you will use and the Boolean operator. Type the keywords in the boxes. Follow the instructions as you go. And now do your search. Report below the Keywords and Boolean operator chosen and the result of your search, that is the number of books/articles found.
NOTE: If your selection provided no results try something else until you are successful.
