To cite a book, identify the following from the book:
- The author
- Year of Publication
- The book title
- City and State of Publication
- Publisher
Formatting:
- Begin with the author's name. Put the last name first, followed by
the author's first initial, ending with a period. If you also know the
author's middle initial, include that after the first initial. Never
include the author's full first or middle name. The book I'll be using
as my example is written by Diane Yancey:
- Next comes the year the book was published. The year of publication
is enclosed in parenthesis:
- Then add the title of the book, in italics. Capitalize the first word
of the title and subtitle (if there is one) and any proper nouns. Leave
the remaining words in lower case letters.
- Finish your citation with the city of publication, a comma, the state,
a colon, and the publisher. The city of publication and the publisher
information can be found on the title page of the book. If your book
was published outside of the United States, include the city and country
of publication. If multiple cities are listed, just include one.
