The
Department of World Languages encourages all BCC
students to participate in travel and study abroad programs
in order to develop and improve their language skills as
well as to engage in significant and meaningful cultural
experiences.
French
Programs for BCC CreditThe
French department has an exchange program
in Nantes, France. It is excellent and also inexpensive.
Nantes happens to be Seattle's sister city. The Chamber
of Commerce in Nantes manages the program. In France, the
Chambers of Commerce are known for providing some of the
best language instruction. This particular school is especially
proud of its multi-media language center, which houses the
latest in instructional CD ROMs and videos.
The
Location
Nantes is located at the mouth of the Loire River.
It hugs the Atlantic coast and gives the tourist access
to several world-class beaches. It's also considered part
of the Loire Valley region, meaning lovely flat roads for
cycling, and exploring its famous castles. Nantes is also
two hours away from Paris via the fast train (TGV).
French
Instructors
Joanne Lonay has made several trips to Nantes
and "La Chambre de Commerce" where the language
school, "L'espace linguistique" operates. She
has also paved the way for students to receive BCC credit
for the courses they take in Nantes. For further information,
you should see Carolyn Bilby, the department chair, but
all our French instructors could answer any questions you
have about Nantes. We also have several orientation videos,
one of which is soon to appear in the Library Media center.
