                                                12-month, Full-time position

 

DEPARTMENT:                  Bookstore

 

SALARY:                               Range 31: $2,161 - $2,789 per month

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Director or Assistant Director of the Bookstore, the Retail Clerk 2 is involved with the day-to-day bookstore activities, follows store and college procedures, assists with the maintenance of appropriate inventory levels and provides quality customer service.  This position performs journey-level work in ordering, shipping, receiving, sales, inventory, cash control, and/or customer service functions of the Bookstore.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED certificate, AND one year of experience in retail selling, cash register operation, general clerical work and/or financial record keeping. 

 

SPECIFIC POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year of experience working in a bookstore
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Textbook Database Systems
  • Demonstrated commitment to pluralism with the ability to advocate for it on campus and work as a team member on a campus committed to pluralism

 

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Answer telephones:  Use professional phone etiquette while answering multi-line telephones, taking messages, transferring calls, and otherwise assisting others over the phone.

Electronic mail: Compose, send, and respond to electronic mail.  Utilize e-mail program functions such as calendars and meeting requests.

Filing systems:  Establish, revise, update, and/or maintain numerical and/or alphabetical filing systems; or, use an electronic filing and storage system (i.e. bar codes, indexing, etc.).

Handle cash: Accept and process cash payments and provide receipts in person or via the mail. 

Inventory: Conduct physical inventories; prepare and maintain inventory records.

Level 1 Database: Use database software, such as Microsoft Access, to create template-based databases and design simple tables, queries, data entry forms, and/or reports. Import data from other sources, sort records by multiple fields, find records, run simple queries, and filter by selection.

Level I Spreadsheet: Use spreadsheet software, such as MS Excel to create, modify, print, and format spreadsheets, find and replace data, and work with basic formulas and functions.

Managing Workloads: Effectively organizes multiple assignments to produce work products that are accurate, thorough and on time.

Multi-task: Prioritize and perform multiple tasks in the same timeframe, handle interruptions appropriately, and return to incomplete tasks.

Provide customer service:  Listen attentively, identify issues, provide options, fulfill services, and/or exercise knowledge of laws and regulations to assist others and/or resolve complaints or conflicts.

Shipping & receiving: Receive, check, price, and stock retail good and supplies. Return goods and supplies to suppliers as needed.

Tact & Diplomacy: Responds to difficult, stressful or sensitive interpersonal situations in ways that reduce or minimize potential conflict and maintains good working relationships among internal and external customers

10-key pad: Accurately use the ten-key numerical keypad on a computer or adding machine to enter numerical data by touch.

Work varying schedules: Willing and able to accept working various schedules and shifts such as rotating shifts, nights, swing, split days off, weekends, on-call, intermittent, etc.

 

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Receive and check textbooks and store merchandise;
  • Returns store merchandise to vendors and requests permission to return damaged and defective merchandise as needed;
  • Assists with providing tasks for student workers;
  • Conduct monthly store supply inventories and report shortages;
  • Work with fiscal staff to reconcile credit memos;
  • Responsible for mail orders, phone orders, and on-line merchandise shipments
  • Assists with pricing and stocking retail goods, supplies and textbooks;
  • Act as back-up cashier and assist customers;
  • Fulfills special request supply orders
  • Contributes to a work environment that embraces diversity and uses diverse perspectives to enhance the organization.

 

Union shop provisions cover this position as the result of a majority vote by employees in the bargaining unit.  All employees must either join the Washington Public Employee’s Association and pay regular union dues or pay a union representation fee on date of hire as required by the Dept of Personnel, Higher Ed. Division rules.
