IT Security

IT security is a dynamic process that frequently requires alteration to address changes in technology, applications, procedures, legal and social imperatives, as well as unanticipated dangers. Gary Farris, Director of IT Security, is the head of Bellevue College's IT Security program.

Services Provided

Under the direction of the Dean of Information Resources, the Director of IT Security manages the college IT security program, including:

 

  • Ensures compliance with Department of Information Services (DIS) and Information Services Board (ISB) policies and standards.
  • Prepares and coordinates college responses to annual IT security audit reviews and 3-year-cycle audits.
  • Develops, implements and maintains college IT security policies and standards.
  • Implements and enforces college IT security rules, standards, and procedures.
  • Makes policy interpretations and decisions, including granting and documenting policy exceptions with cause.
  • Coordinates IR response to IT security incidents and investigations.
  • Represents IT security interests in various campus-level committees.
  • Liase with campus security and law enforcement regarding IT security matters.
  • Maintains written records pertaining to the program and all security activities

 

Additionally, the Director of IT Security:

  • Acts as a professional technology specialist and expert consultant to the dean and other college executives and administrators regarding IT security matters.
  • Provides technical network and IT security support for mission-critical and infrastructure-related systems, including administration of network, server and client security, working with campus support personnel to configure, monitor and audit the college network, desktop and related resources.

The ISB

The Washington State Information Services Board (ISB) requires that all state agencies conduct an IT Security Policy and Standards Compliance Audit once every three years. Bellevue College's next full audit will occur in August 2009. Detailed information about the requirements of this audit, as provided by the State Auditor's office and the ISB, can be found at:
