Before coming to your appointment with the BCC Academic Internship Program Coordinator, please make sure to follow these steps:

STEP 1: Write a Resume

First, you need to have a resume. You can get a copy of our "Resume Essentials" packet by coming into the Center for Career Connections (second floor of Building B, the Student Services building), or you can email lmccray@bcc.ctc.edu to request a copy. This packet contains important information about resume content and formatting, as well as several helpful worksheets and templates.

Please spend some time working on your resume before making an appointment. The more time you devote to this before your appointment, the more productive the appointment will be. Please also note these minimum resume requirements:
  • Do NOT include your home address on your resume. Please include only your telephone number and email address for contact information.
  • Do NOT use a resume template in Microsoft Word.
  • Do NOT include reference names and contact info.
  • If you choose put an objective at the top of your resume, make sure it says "internship" and not "job".
  • When saving your resume, use a name that's descriptive, such as: "Laura_McCray_Resume." Do not just name your resume "Resume."

STEP 2: Think About What You Are Looking For

Before your appointment, you should also consider the type of internship you are looking for. Think about the kinds of activities you imagine yourself doing and the kinds of skills you imagine yourself using. Do you have a preference about the kind of organization/company (small/large, private/public, for-profit/non-profit, etc.)? Also, consider the following questions:

  • How many hours per week can you devote to an internship?
  • What are the specific times and days that you are available to work?
  • What geographic area can you potentially work in? Do you have a car?
  • What other limitations, problems, or concerns can you think of?

STEP 3: At the Appointment

When you meet with the Academic Internship Program Coordinator, you will talk about the kind of internship you would like. You will also review your resume to make sure it's looking perfect. It may seem obvious, but if your resume isn´t in great shape, you're less likely to get called for an interview. The Internship Coordinator will make some suggestions and check to make sure your resume meets our minimum requirements (see above). Then you will discuss a strategy for finding an internship.
