Creating an Internship Position
STEP 1
Identify who will mentor and supervise the intern(s)
Ideal mentors have
- Patience, interpersonal skills, and an interest in being a role model for the intern and interest in helping the intern grow professionally
Mentors or supervisors need to have the ability and time to:
- Offer feedback to the intern, comment on the intern's performance, help the intern to network, communicate the intern's learning role to other employees and integrate the intern into the workplace.
- Consider choosing someone within your company to serve as an internal internship coordinator. This will allow for more consistency as interns leave and new interns begin.
STEP 2
Provide a workspace and equipment
Please make sure that you have a space for the intern to work, a computer connection if needed and adequate material resources/financial resources for the intern.
STEP 3
Determine scheduling
Students need to know how many hours a week they will be working as well as the length of the time commitment. It is fine to be flexible but please include a minimum number of hours per week that you expect. Including this information in your job description will lessen any potential confusion and help you get a good response to your ad.
STEP 4
Meet with us to discuss your needs
At any time in the hiring process please contact us to schedule a time to meet and discuss your needs and the Academic Internship Program. The meeting will help us better understand your needs and ensure a quality learning experience for potential interns. For your convenience and to better promote your internship to potential interns, we can schedule a time to meet at your organization.
