Healthcare Informatics
Healthcare Informatics is the digital backbone of patient care. Hospitals, clinics, physician practices and in home patient care all increasingly rely on electronic medical records and information retrieval. A broad range of employment opportunities exists in this rapidly changing sector. The Bellevue College Healthcare Informatics Certificate prepares learners with IT experience to seek employment in this area.

The six month, 18-credit program presents learners with a critical mass of knowledge about hospital organization, business practices & culture; adoption of the electronic medical record, including hands on experience; how data moves across a medical center; patient safety and security issues, technical infrastructure, standards and interoperability.
Coursework is completed online; learners and instructors meet twice quarterly on campus.

Upon successful completion of the program, learners gain:
- Historical perspective of healthcare in the United States, with emphasis on cost, quality and access.
- Referential framework of healthcare reform currently underway in the United States.
- Exposure to immediate workforce demand and characteristics required for employment in the current and near future healthcare infrastructure.
- Understanding of the ramifications of the electronic medical record (EMR) to patients, policy, and data delivery
- A working understanding of coding and classification systems
- Understanding of the convergence of bioinformatics, clinical engineering and healthcare informatics.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and other patient privacy and security issues .
Knowledge of hospital technical infrastructure, technical standards, systems interoperability and medical device integration.
Working knowledge of project management principals in a healthcare setting.
The BC Healthcare Informatics Certificate is awarded upon successful completion of 18 credits.
