Help improve BCC! Give to the BCC Foundation Annual Fund!

Thanks to the generosity of staff and faculty, the BCC Foundation’s 2004-05 Annual Fund is 41 percent of the way toward its $20,000 goal. And thanks to those who have made new or increased donations, the Foundation has raised $2,730 toward a $3,000 anonymous challenge gift. Just $270 more in new or increased gifts will secure these matching funds! And it’s not too late to help. To make a donation, please contact Development Officer Elizabeth Perera at X2945 or eperera@bcc.ctc.edu. Several convenient giving methods are available. You can make a pledge for the year and create your own installment plan, or you can make a one-time gift. You can pay through payroll deduction or by check or credit card. As a token of appreciation, donors will receive a BCC Espresso Gift Certificate good for one delicious coffee drink at the BCC Café, Garage or R-Building coffee stands. All Annual Fund gifts support scholarships, educational programming and employee excellence at BCC. It’s not too late to help reach the goal!

Help others through the CEABCC Giving Tree

With winter quickly approaching, let's keep our community in mind. Thousands of area families lack the means to provide basic necessities for their loved ones, let alone special gifts for birthday or holiday celebrations. You can help these families by taking part in the CEABCC Giving Tree program. Giving Tree displays will remain available across campus through Dec. 10, each holding tags that list suggested gifts. The tags will either list specific items (e.g., Girl – age 5 – pink sweater, size 4T), which will go to the families of three BCC students, or generic items such as slippers, blankets, underwear, or toys, which will be delivered to local charities for distribution. Please take a gift tag with an item you’d like to purchase, return the item UNWRAPPED (and with the tag for tracking) to a donation site. Donations of money and gift certificates also are welcome. For questions, contact one of the Giving Tree committee members: Shannon Horst (chair), Trina Ballard, Amy MacNeill, Shari Smelser, and Rodger Harrison.

Keep the homeless warm this winter

Ninety-five homeless men and women live in temporary shelters in Tent City 4, and there are many others throughout the Eastside. You can help them stay warm this winter with a donation of cold-weather clothing – unused men’s-size socks, knit caps and gloves – to the Warming Campaign. Warming Campaign collection boxes will be available now through Nov. 30 in the Science, Arts & Humanities, Social Science, Business and Health Sciences division offices, as well as the Office of Instruction, Student Services (near Cashier), Human Resources, Library (L-100), Campus Operations and the employee dining room in the Cafeteria.  For further information contact Myra Van Vactor (X3056) or Becky Turnbull (X2275).

Help the environment and BCC cross-country

You can help reduce the waste stream AND support cross-country scholarships by recycling your inkjet printer cartridges. Deposit any of the small (i.e., small enough to fit in the palm of your hand) HP, Epson, Canon, Lexmark or Xerox cartridges in collection boxes in division offices and outside the student activities office by the cafeteria.  Or send the cartridges directly to Stella Orechia in G100C. For further information, or to get a collection box for your office, contact Stella (X2353).

Support the Ceramics Program’s Holiday Art Sale

The Arts and Humanities Ceramic Arts sale, featuring the work of current and former students, will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, in room C-157. The sale will feature art by current and former students and invited artists. This year, pottery from the late Gerald Gardner will be included. Gerry was a long-time BCC student whose work has been collected by many. This will probably be the last opportunity to purchase his very imaginative work at BCC. Other work available this year include ornaments, functional pottery and sculptural work. Sale proceeds will buy supplies and equipment for the Ceramics Program. For further information, email Lars Husby.

Give BCC Bucks this holiday season

Give an experience to remember this holiday season. Give BCC Bucks, a gift certificate that can be redeemed for any class in BCC’s Continuing Education program. BCC Bucks will be made available to the public through ads in the Seattle Weekly’s gift guides and in programs for performances of the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s “The Nutcracker,” 5th Avenue Theater’s “Peter Pan” and “A Christmas Carol” at ACT. To give your loved ones a gift they’ll love, call Continuing Education at X2263. BCC Bucks also will soon be available online at www.gotobcc.com.

Students in Free Enterprise to visit BCC

A representative of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) will visit BCC on Wed., Dec. 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room C-225, to explore the possibility of establishing a SIFE chapter at BCC. SIFE fosters community and economic growth through socially responsible free enterprise, engaging in outreach projects to teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal and financial success and business ethics. Interested faculty and staff are welcome to join the discussion. For further information, contact Juan Maldonado at juan@student.bcc.ctc.edu.

Here’s your chance to get on stage

The BCC Drama Department invites all students, faculty and staff to audition for the winter Mainstage Production, “Six Degrees of Separation,” written by John Guare and directed by Tammis Doyle. Auditions will be held in Carlson Theatre on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 3 to 5 p.m., and on Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Callbacks will be held Dec. 10 if needed. To sign up for an audition, add your name to the sheet on the callboard in the Theatre lobby. Bring one contemporary dramatic or comic monologue to the audition, and please try to read the play before the try-outs, as you may be asked to read from the script.  Play rehearsals will be held Monday through Thursday evenings and on some weekends.  Performances will be March 11 through 19.

Dream of summer in Greece

It’s cold, it’s wet, it’s winter in the Northwest. But just around the corner is a dream of sunshine and warmth in Greece. Vicki Artimovich, Art Historian at BCC, will be conducting a “Glories of Greece” tour in the summer of 2005.  Join her for three weeks of guaranteed sunshine, fabulous art and exciting beaches.  The tour is tentatively scheduled for the first three weeks of July. Watch The Grapevine and Jibsheet for future announcements of an informational slide presentation in January.  For more information, email Vicki or call her at X2629 or (425) 401-0403.

Off the Vine

That’s a lot of bookings!

During the first four months of this fiscal year, Facilities Events booked 2,863 non-academic events and activities into BCC facilities. Thirty-two percent of those bookings were public events, representing 5,047 event hours and an estimated 76,000 attendees. These events were booked around the class schedule and internal use by Athletics, Student Programs and other official BCC groups, which have priority over public events for space on campus. Examples of public usage include homeowner’s association meetings, the Bloodmobile, car shows, concerts, Church services, Indian cultural classes, planetarium shows and a Pakistani wedding. Recently, the Archdiocese of Seattle held a weekend youth convention here for 1,500 high school students – a great opportunity to showcase BCC to propective students. For more information about the BCC Events office, email Jamie Dye.

Movers & Shakers

Nancy Gonlin, Anthropology instructor and Mesoamerican archaeologist, has authored a chapter entitled “Methods for Understanding Classic Maya Commoners:  Structure, Function, Energetics and More,” for the book Ancient Maya Commoners. The book, which is edited by Jon C. Lohse and Fred Valdez, Jr., was recently published by the University of Texas Press. A copy will be made available in the BCC library.

Two returning BCC baseball players, Tim Ahern and Ian Harrington, have signed national letters of intent to accept baseball scholarships with Texas Tech University and the University of Hawaii, respectively. Both players signed this week during the early signing period, when many of the top college athletic prospects in the nation commit to four-year institutions.

Two BCC volleyball players, Vanessa LoPriore and Kelsey Ruddy, have been named to the NWAACC All-Region Team. LoPriore, a middle blocker, and Ruddy, a setter, also hold the top grade point averages on the team.

The Institutional Advancement team has won a gold award for its brochure, "Discover BCC," which summarizes the major selling points of BCC. The honor was part of the 2004 Medallion Awards for the Region VII of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges.  Region 7 includes five Northwestern states and three Canadian provinces.  There were 175 entrants in the Brochures category. For a copy of the brochure, which is intended for community contacts, please call Anne Norberg at X2386.

Numerous BCC faculty, staff and students are quoted in an article entitled, “ Bellevue Community College: Providing Opportunity, Promoting Diversity,” in the 2004 edition of Internationalizing the Campus. BCC appears in the book by virtue of having been chosen as one of only five schools nationwide to receive a 2004 Sen. Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization. The Awards program is a joint project of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the U.S. Department of State and the Educational Testing Service.
