BCC Celebrates Student Achievements at Commencement, June 11

BCC students of diverse backgrounds and ages will mark a significant milestone in their lives during the 2003-04 commencement ceremony on Friday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the BCC gymnasium. The college will award a record-breaking 2,173 degrees and certificates to BCC graduates, many of whom will continue to four-year institutions or begin new careers. Bellevue Mayor Connie Marshall will deliver the keynote address and ASBCC President Angel Kelchev will speak to the graduating class.

 

A separate ceremony will recognize the accomplishments of Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language program graduates and volunteers on Thursday, June 10 at 7 p.m. in the Carlson Theater. The keynote speaker will be Margin of Excellence winner Barbara Wright, Part-time Faculty member for ABE and GED Mathematics.

 

Faculty members participating in Friday's commencement ceremony should meet in the R Building second floor east lobby by 6:30 p.m. Volunteers are still needed to assist with set-up for the ceremony. For more information, contact Wendy Brault in Enrollment Services at 564-3182.

 

Say Farewell to Scholar-in-Residence Stella Williams at June 4 Reception

All faculty and staff are invited to a send-off reception for Stella Williams on Friday, June 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room C120. Williams touched the campus in many ways – as a scholar sharing her perspective on ecology, economics, human rights and politics and as a storyteller, colleague and friend. Community Raises More than $130,000 for BCC Scholarships, Programs

Enthusiastic support from more than 300 participants at the 2004 BCC Foundation Luncheon resulted in $136,600 in funds for student scholarships, mini grants and college programs. BCC wins national service learning and civic engagement award!

The Community College National Center of Community Engagement selected BCC for a national Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Collaboration Award. The award recognizes BCC's service learning course “Multicultural Entrepreneurship and Consulting” which connects consulting teams of BCC students and advisors from large corporations with underserved minority- and women-owned small business. Developed by Business instructor Leslie Lum, the course has provided more than 3,000 consulting hours to area small businesses since it began two years ago.

 

KBCS Listeners Turn up Fundraising Volume

With a strong show of support for community radio, 1,300 KBCS listeners pledged more than $122,000 during the station's recent 10-day drive. A KBCS benefit attracted 1,000 people to hear Democracy Now! Host Amy Goodman at Town Hall. Capping off the fundraising season, the Bellevue Arts Commission awarded the station a $5,000 grant to continue production of “The Old Country,” a Sunday night program that highlights local music experts, many of whom have international ties.

 

Governor Locke Honors Employer of BCC WorkFirst Students

BCC WorkFirst student employer Safeway received a Business Appreciation Award from Governor Gary Locke this month. Worker Retraining and WorkFirst Director Darlene Molsen nominated Safeway for its active involvement in job fairs and mock interviews that have resulted in student hiring from the WorkFirst English as a Second Language/Customer Service program. Students prepare for employment by completing 11 to 22 weeks of integrated ESL, customer service and computer literacy training along with a service learning experience in the workplace.

Add BCC Reads! to Your Summer Booklist

Delve into the experience of Japanese Americans interned during World War II in the new BCC Reads! selection , When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka. Instructors are encouraged to incorporate the work into curricula for 2004-05. Copies are now available at the BCC Bookstore. In Brief

The Library Media Center will be closed during finals week and the following week, June 7 through June 18, as center staff move to the L Building lobby to make way for D Building renovation. Library and Media services will be unavailable during this time. No reserve materials or media equipment will be available for check out during finals week. You may continue to return library materials to the book drop outside the library. If you have any questions, please call the Library Circulation Office at 564-2252 or the Media Services Office at 564-2253.

 

The Library Media Center will open for summer quarter 2004 in the L building at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, June 21. The LMC plans to move back into the remodeled D Building in late 2005 or early 2006.

Y'all come up and see us sometime – BCC Business Division has moved to Room A242 from its temporary quarters in Room D104. A formal open house will be planned soon. Watch all-campus e-mail for details.

Did you know a 150-pound cyclist burns 410 calories while pedaling 12 miles in an hour? “Saddle up” for WRQ Bike to Work Month starting Friday, May 21 with Bike to Work Day. Organized by the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation, Bike to Work Day drew more than 10,000 riders last year. Pedal for five roundtrips through June 19 and you will qualify for the month-long Group Health Commute Challenge (with a chance to win great prizes!) BCC has lockers and showers in the gym and bicycle racks around campus for convenience. Park the gas guzzler and get a GoBCC pass! BCC employees and students can purchase monthly or quarterly passes at the Cashier in the B Building and save! Full-time staff members pay $19 a year and the pass is valid to travel anywhere, anytime with Metro and Sound Transit through December 31, 2004. Part-time staff and students also have deep subsidies. BCC Kids Camp – Children ages 3 to 5 can enjoy music, movement, hands-on discovery and outdoor play at two-week day camp sessions, between July 6 – August 12. Camps are staffed by BCC early childhood teachers and parent education instructors. Rates range from $67 to $180 depending on the number of days per week. Movers & Shakers

ASBCC president and 4.0 student Angel Kelchev was selected as one of 27 students nationwide to receive the prestigious Jack Kent Cook Foundation Scholarship, which will fund up to $30,000 per year for higher education. Rick Mangan, American Sign Language instructor, has been invited by the Belgian Embassy to a ceremony marking 60 th anniversary of his uncle Danny Mangan's heroic act. During World War II, Danny Mangan piloted a B-17 bomber called “To Hell or Glory” safely beyond Outer, Belgium before he was killed in the crash. Rick Mangan is collecting historical documents and interviewing survivors to write a book about the event.

Anthropology instructor Nancy Gonlin completed archeological fieldwork in Teozacoalco, Oaxaca, Mexico this spring. She recorded and mapped many new sites that primarily date to about 1,000 years ago and relate to the Mixtec people.

Ross Brown, instructor of Three-dimensional Art, was featured in the new magazine Artisan Northwest. His unique cabinet and door knobs fashioned from sculpted metal and Northwest rocks have become a hit nationwide.

Art instructor Bob Purser is currently featured in two Eastside exhibits. See his work in “The Cutting Edge: new directions in fiber,” at the Eastshore Unitarian Church gallery in Bellevue (through June 30, 12700 SE 32nd ) and at Kirkland City Hall in the “Renew, Recycle and Recreate” show of recycled materials in art (through July 30). The “Renew” exhibition was curated by BCC TELOS Art instructor Donna Porter.

Thanks to a BCC Foundation Mini Grant, Sue Ferguson attended the National Head Start Association conference in Anaheim where she presented two workshops called “Clever Connections with Parents” – ways to encourage parent involvement in childcare and Head Start. The Head Start program at BCC's Early Learning Family and Childcare Center serves 24 income eligible children ages 3 to 5 years old with preschool education, health and nutrition services and family support.

ITS Systems Engineer Norman Choo launched a fundraising program for Bearcare through the Malaysian Association of Seattle. He collected 71 bears for the KLSY Mix 92.5 Radio Teddy Bear Patrol. The donated bears are provided to police officers, firefighters and paramedics to comfort frightened, injured and sick children.

Terri Halsey of Campus Operations won red ribbons for her tiered baby shower cake and 3D lion face cake in the Washington State Sugar Artists annual show, which included entries from Canada and three states.

BCC DEC students earned top spots at the international marketing competition! David Wright and Adrian Menstell took first place in the Advertising Campaign category at the international Delta Epsilon Chi (DEC) International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. As part of a team of six students from various colleges, BCC's Nikoleta Kelcheva placed third for a marketing plan in the National Management Institute competition. Kelsey Stapleton and Nathan Peterson ranked in the top 15 for Sports and Entertainment Marketing. The DEC competition included more than 2,000 students preparing for careers primarily in marketing, management, merchandising and entrepreneurship.

TRiO students earned more than 100 certificates for their winter quarter academic achievements and greater than half of the recipients received gold certificates for earning a quarterly GPA of 3.50 or higher. Program participants achieved an amazing 93 percent retention rate and 3.0 average GPA during the last academic year!  TRiO Student Support Services honored participants at the quarterly Awards Reception on May 6. BCC Reads! scholarship winner Autumn Heslin received her award from Diane Douglas, Center for Liberal Arts Executive Director, and Ian Frazier, author of this year's BCC Reads! selection On the Rez. Many TRiO students were featured in the program, including ASG President Angel Kelchev who welcomed attendees, Heidi Nelson-VanVactor and Irving Fenner who gave student testimonials, and tenor Andrew Thureson who performed the song "You're Still You."

BCC Mathletes are number one in the region and number two nationwide! BCC students placed first in the northwest region, which includes Washington, Oregon and Idaho, for the sixth straight year. Shile Zhang placed first in the region and tenth in the nation and Vincent Wu placed second in the region and tied for thirteenth nationally. David Yu and Zhi Xu placed fourth and fifth in the region. More than 150 colleges across the country take part in the annual competition of two-year colleges, sponsored by the American Mathematical Association.

General Business Management and Continuing Education instructor Louis Watanabe was quoted in a Seattle Times article about the new Manzanar Historic Site museum on April 25. Watanabe's grandfather was interned at the Manzanar prison camp during World War II. The Manzanar National Park museum is located 220 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California.
