Calendar | Welcome & Farewell |
A big thanks to all BCC staff and faculty members who donated to this year’s Annual Fund! To date, BCC employees donated an impressive $17,650 – more than 160 percent of the Foundation’s $11,000 goal! And donations continue to come in from last October's successful staff and faculty campaign. Revenue generated is crucial to support scholarship programs as well as faculty and staff initiatives in the form of Mini-Grants, equipment, supplies and program enhancements. For more information about the Annual Fund, please contact Elizabeth Perera, Development Officer, at 564-2945 or via campus e-mail.
The second round of Mini-Grants will support a diverse range of programs on campus, from Adult Basic Education and WorkFirst to KBCS, Earth Week and Tech Prep. There was an enthusiastic response to the new Mini-Grant program: 30 requests for more than $52,000 were received. For the spring round, the Foundation funded 12 requests for a total of $8,115. The next round of grant applications will be accepted in fall 2004. Watch the Grapevine for more details.

Grounds Crew and Volunteers Turn Earth Mound into a Children’s GardenKids at the Early Learning Family and Childcare Center can enjoy a natural garden with wood arbor tunnel, stepping-stone trails and sense-inspiring plants thanks to the efforts of the BCC Grounds Crew and volunteers. A muddy dirt mound was transformed into a garden that encourages children to play and explore nature. Kids and teachers even plan to grow flowers and vegetables this summer. Many thanks to the BCC Grounds Crew and dedicated ELFCC volunteers who contributed their creativity and hard work!
More than 53 employees, including President Jean Floten, participated in the two-day workshop "Beyond Diversity, Courageous Conversations on Race," February 20 and 21. The workshop was facilitated by Glenn Singleton and 22 BCC employees who participated in weekly conversations about race and racism for nine months.
Feedback from the participants was positive and affirmed the need to continue
and expand the conversations college-wide. One participant said, “Hands
down the best workshop I have ever attended. Painful, inspiring, exhausting,
invigorating...This workshop gave me HOPE that I can become a better person
and that this will help others live (even if only a little) in a better world.”
Another shared, “I think this is a beginning; I think hiring more faculty
and staff of color and increasing the numbers of students of color through greater
conscious opportunities for them at this institution would be valuable...”
The workshop was sponsored by the Employee Pluralism Committee, the Diversity
Caucus, Human Resources and a mini-grant from the BCC Foundation. For more information,
please contact Akemi Matsumoto at
564-2212 or via campus e-mail.

Get a more official college look for your site without extensive redesigning.
If you are responsible for updating a BCC website or are in the process of planning
a new site design, we strongly encourage you to consider adding a BCC web identity
bar. This new element is being offered to help you achieve a more official college
look and feel, and establish a standard navigation path back for your site visitors
to the BCC home page. You add the identity bar by adding a line of code into
all pages of your site.
Interested? Please read the guidelines and download instructions
now available on the BCC Web Publishing Guide. You may also see a few examples
of websites that are already using the new bar on their sites:
Follow the same editorial rules that are used throughout the BCC public website.
A new section is now available in the BCC Web Publishing Guide that offers tips
on writing for the web, tone and style, specific spelling and reference of BCC
names and terms, and important grammar points. Read more at http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/webpublishing/editorial/default.asp
