Celebrate Valentine’s Day on the twinkling waters of Puget Sound this Friday night! The popular cruise for BCC employees and students boards at Seattle’s Pier 55 on Alaskan Way around 7:30 p.m. and departs at 8 p.m. Tickets may be purchased on campus in C106 and cost $20 for one and $35 for two. Sweets and refreshments are included. This romantic voyage is sponsored by the BCC Campus Activities Board, Phi Theta Kappa and the Associated Student Government. For details and directions, contact the Campus Activities Board at 564-2448 or stop by Room C106.
The college received a Certificate of Commendation from the Washington State
Board for Community and Technical Colleges for achieving or exceeding its 2001-2003
Performance Reporting targets for student transfer, student preparation for
the workforce and adult basic education/English as a Second Language skill achievement.
During the 2002-03 academic year, BCC prepared 3,737 graduates for transfer
to four-year institutions, 17 percent (547 students) more than it had targeted
and the highest number among all community colleges in the state. Also this
year, BCC prepared 775 students to move directly into the workforce, 38 percent
(215 students) more than targeted. In addition, 60 percent of BCC’s Adult
Basic Education and ESL students met targeted skill levels, achieving the stated
goal.
“These achievements result from a lot of hard work by our faculty, staff
and students,” said BCC President Jean Floten. “We are delighted
by the success of our educational strategies in each of these three areas, and
we look forward to continuing to improve our performance in the years to come.”
Think of the faculty and staff who lead by example, who inspire others and make the college a better place to work and learn. Take a moment to nominate that dedicated employee for the 2004 Margin of Excellence Awards! Each year the BCC Foundation recognizes outstanding faculty and classified staff members who demonstrate a commitment to excellence through their contributions to the campus and to the community. Margin of Excellence awards of $1,000 each are awarded to a select number of recipients. BCC employees, students and trustees are encouraged to nominate faculty and staff candidates. Nominations must be submitted to the BCC Foundation office (A102) by March 10. Award recipients will be announced in April and honored in a campus ceremony in May. Last year's winners were staff members Bonnie Ellis and Kazumi Hada-Chan and faculty members Cathy Lyle and Rudy Helm (full-time) as well as Joyce Staples (part-time). Application forms are available online at http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/foundation/moeapplications/index.htm. For more details, please contact Institutional Advancement at 564-2386.

Professional dress is recommended (business casual) and attendees should bring several copies of polished resumes and cover letters. at BCC. Faculty and staff members who work with students are encouraged to let
them know about the contest. The BCC Reads! Scholarship deadline is February

Welcome to new BCC staff and faculty:
A fond farewell to departing BCC employees:
BCC’s vocal jazz ensemble “Celebration” was one of only four college groups selected for an international jazz conference, and the only group from the West Coast, writes the King County Journal. Ensemble director Tom Almli is quoted in the January 19 article. Read the story online at http://www.kingcountyjournal.com/sited/story/html/154025.
Tom Almli was also interviewed by The Seattle Times about Celebration’s prestigious selection to perform at the International Association of Jazz Education in New York. BCC guest speaker Tim Wise shared his views about racial inequality with The
Seattle Times on January 16. Wise gave a presentation at the college to
celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Read more online at http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=wise16e&date=20040116&query=Tim+Wise.
