College Community Invited to Student Programs Open House Today
BCC staff, faculty, students and alumni are invited to the Student Programs year-end celebration and open house, today in Room C212. The celebration and awards ceremony kicks off the afternoon from 2 – 3 p.m. , followed by an open house of the remodeled Student Programs offices from 3 – 5 p.m. An open house for BCC alumni and former employees wraps up the festivities from 5 – 7 p.m.
BCC Celebrates Its Largest Graduating Class, June 13
BCC students of diverse backgrounds and ages will mark a significant milestone in their lives during the 2002-03 commencement ceremony on Friday, June 13 at 7 p.m. in the BCC gymnasium. The college will award a record-breaking 2,100 or more degrees and certificates to BCC graduates, many of whom will continue to four-year institutions or begin new careers. Kemper Freeman of Kemper Development will deliver the keynote address. Faculty member Rudy Helm and ASBCC President Kennedy Symekher will also speak to the graduating class. A separate ceremony will recognize the accomplishments of Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language program graduates on Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. in the Carlson Theater. Faculty members participating in Friday's commencement ceremony should meet in the R Building second floor east lobby by 6:30 p.m. Volunteers are still needed to assist with set-up for the ceremony. Accreditation Self-study Begins
Evaluators representing the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges will visit BCC in fall 2005 for a comprehensive, ten-year accreditation review. To prepare for the visit, BCC will conduct a thorough self-study that examines every aspect of the institution and involves the entire college community. Ron Leatherbarrow , Executive Dean, Office of Instruction, serves as the College's Accreditation Liaison Officer. English Instructor Jerrie Kennedy , Institutional Research Director Valerie Hodge and Lynne Sage, Mathematics Instructor, constitute the BCC Accreditation Planning Committee. Each of the nine standards that make up the self-study will be addressed by a committee made up of faculty, classified staff, administrators and students. Over 100 college employees are serving as chairs and members of subcommittees and all members of the college are invited and encouraged to participate in the process. A new Web site is available at www.bcc.ctc.edu/accreditation and via MyBCC to show meeting dates, minutes and progress toward goals. Check the site to provide feedback and learn about celebrations too. Specific information about activities planned for Academic Year 03-04 will be available soon. Baseball Team Sets Another Association Record
The BCC men's baseball team wraps up an exciting season. The team finished with a 30-17 record, and qualified for the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College (NWAACC) Championships for the twenty-first consecutive year – setting another NWAACC record! BCC defeated Everett Community College to earn the North Region number two seed in the championships, where the BCC team finished fifth overall.
KBCS Completes Its Most Successful On-air Fund Drive
During the recent nine-day KBCS membership drive, the station received more than 1,500 pledges from the community and raised over $100,000. Station General Manager Steve Ramsey says this response underscores the increasing relevance of KBCS and its unduplicated programming in the greater Seattle market.
Classified and Faculty Leaders Elected For Next Year
The classified, faculty and student associations recently selected new leaders for the 2003-04 year, which begins July 1. Glenn Davis is the new President of the classified staff association, who will serve with Presidents-elect Melissa Sitzenstock, and Amy MacNeill. Frank Lee was elected President of the faculty association.
New Student Association Officers
Angel Kelchev will become the new President of the student government association and Simon Smart will serve as Vice President for Finance and Communications. Aamer Malik will act as Vice President for Student Affairs. New terms begin July 1.
Parking Garage Construction Underway
PCL Construction will begin work on the new 720-space parking garage this week. During construction, there will be a few parking and access changes. Parking lots F1and F2 will be closed and pedestrian access down Kelsey Creek Road will be limited to the south side of the street. The Metro bus stop will operate as usual. The east ends of parking lots 1, 3 and 5 will also be fenced off for a detention pond project. Lots E1, E2 and E3 will be available for employee parking. Congratulations to:
- Home run! Former BCC baseball athlete Jason Ellison made it to the major leagues. Drafted by the San Francisco Giants, Ellison will play outfielder at Pac Bell Park . He attended BCC in 1997-98, and most recently played for the Fresno Grizzlies – the Giants' AAA affiliate. Mark Yoshino , Men's Baseball Coach at BCC says Ellison is the second BCC player to ascend to the major leagues in 20 years. The last player was Steve Gajkowski , who played at BCC in 1989-90. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians and later pitched for the Seattle Mariners.
- The “ Celebration” Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Combo won first place awards at the University of Nevada-Reno Jazz Festival. BCC students won eight solo awards at the competition. “Celebration” also placed first in the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho . Both competitions for the college division included four-year colleges. Congratulations go to Tom Almli, Group Instructor, and Hal Sherman, who trained musicians in the combo.
- Presentations by BCC instructors and staff were selected for a national conference for the Commission of Adult Basic Education, held in Portland , Oregon . Mindy Iwen , WorkFirst English as a Second Language (ESL) Project Manager, Garnet Templin-Imel , Program Chair for Developmental Education and Ty Dunning , WorkFirst Instructor, presented McEnglish: Teaching English to Shift Managers at McDonald's. Tess HelesHunt , Volunteer Tutor Manager, Anne Dolan and Barbara Wright , Adult Basic Education instructors, had a packed audience for their new curriculum, Training and Using Volunteer Tutors in the Classroom . Judy Roberts , Donna Holstad and Jessica Sanders , ESL instructors, presented their pioneering service learning approach, We're in This Together: Helping a Learning Community Across Levels .
- Suzanne Kanetomi , Program Coordinator, Continuing Education World Languages and Travel, was selected as the “Employee of the Month” by the classified staff association. Co-workers remarked about her great customer service and her “grace under pressure.” One colleague raved, “In a fast-paced, often tense environment, Suzanne's integrity, serenity, selflessness and humor are never-failing.”
- Andrew Johnson , General Business Management Instructor and Program Chair , was one of six college instructors from Washington at the International Business Institute for Community College Faculty at Michigan State University . He learned about strategies to develop cultural diversity and global business practices into curricula to increase career and wage opportunities for students.
- Early Learning Center staff Francisca Dominquez , Pam Sanders , Alicea Rieger and Jan Dwyer received ‘Hero' awards for their contributions to the early childhood education field from the Eastside Association for the Education of Young Children.
- The BCC Pluralism committee donated food and more than $120 raised at the Taste of BCC event to the local Hopelink food bank. Committee members are: Susan Jamieson , Tony Akhlaghi , Becky Turnbull (chair), Cora Nixon , Emily Fisher , Myra Van Vactor , Akemi Matsumoto , Juan Ulloa and Lucy Macneil .
- Economic instructors, Humaira Jackson and Rebecca Baldwin presented a session at Seattle University about integrating technology in courses to better accommodate different student learning styles. The session was part of the 14th annual Northwest Economics Educators Conference, which draws economic instructors from local colleges and universities to improve undergraduate classes.
- BCC ranks 25th in the country of the top 40 associate institutions with the greatest number of international students, according to the Institute of International Education . In Washington 's system of community colleges, BCC ranked first with 778 international students last year. The top 50 international students at BCC all earned 4.0 grade point averages during winter quarter 2003! International Student Programs awarded its spring Leadership Scholarship to Shaneabbas Jessa .
- Medtronic Physio-Control in Redmond selected the BCC Business and Professional Training Institute as its higher education provider of choice. The company's yearlong education contract with BCC includes as many as 12,000 person-hours of training.
- BCC ‘Mathletes' summed up another victory in the AMATYC Student Math League Competition. BCC students emerged on top for the fifth year in a row – they placed first in state and seventh nationally – advancing from 13 th place last year!
- BCC nursing degree student Sukhvinder Kaur was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the King County Nurses Association at its 100-year anniversary celebration. Her award was based on academic achievement, school activities and community involvement.
- Interior Design student Melinda Nichols received $1,000 as first runner-up in the 2003 Pacific Northwest Student Entrepreneur Awards program, part of the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards program of the Jefferson Smurfit Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at St. Louis University. Melinda plans to use her BCC design degree to create nurturing spaces in healthcare and retirement facilities. Interior Design students Teresa Miller and Erin Long will appear as design experts on the Home and Garden Television (HGTV) “Smart Solutions” show. Focused on affordable designs for small spaces, the segment was filmed in a University of Washington dorm room and will air sometime in September.

- Persian Music and Mysticism – Vocalist, ney bamboo flute musician and teacher Dr. Hossein Omoumi will perform Persian music, May 29 , from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Garden Room, C130. Born in Iran , Omoumi teaches ney and avaz (vocals) at the Center for Oriental Music Studies in Paris . Omoumi has performed extensively in Europe and the United States . He was also featured as the ney soloist in the soundtrack of the movie "The Sweet Hereafter," which won several awards at the 1997 Cannes International Film Festival. - Write Competitive Cover Letters – This two-part workshop includes the essentials of cover, inquiry and marketing letters on May 29 , followed by a guided feedback session, to help make your letters stand out, on June 5 . - Arts SOS: Skills, Opportunities and Survival – Artists are invited to learn about the latest resources to help them stay afloat. State, county and local arts commissions as well as Artist Trust representatives will share their insights at BCC Art-Zones' all-day seminar, May 31, from 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. in C154. Learn about opportunities in public art and the skills needed to compete; international exchanges; free exposure through electronic portfolios and libraries, and the pros and cons of wholesale shows . - An Evening with Robert Hunter – Poet, songwriter and musician Robert Hunter is a classic troubadour and voice of America . Known for the songs he penned for the Grateful Dead – “Ripple”, “Uncle John's Band” and “Truckin'” – he also contributed material to the Jefferson Starship and Bob Dylan. Hunter will perform solo with his guitar, June 10 and 11 at 8 p.m. at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle . - Digital Media Showcase – Media students show off their pixels! Come and see, hear and interact with students and their artwork spanning animation, Web, multimedia, video and gaming. The show takes place June 12 , from 6 – 10 p.m. in the NWCET Building , Room N202.
- Student Art Exhibition – Swing by the BCC Library Gallery to view a collage of drawings, paintings, sculpture, c eramics, photography and more by talented BCC student artists. The show runs through October.

Off the Vine
Bruce Woodruff , former BCC trustee from 1981 to 1985, passed away in April. He taught evening classes at the college in finance and accounting and was a charter member of the General Business Management Advisory Committee.
