Expand Your World Knowledge at Visiting Scholar Event
Staff, faculty and students are invited to join Nawang Dorjee, Director of Education for the Tibetan Children’s Village and BCC’s first international scholar-in-residence, for an informative lecture and to view segments of a BBC documentary on Tibet on Friday from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the library. During the “Peaceful Activism: Tibetan Culture, Norms and Way of Life” event, you will learn more about the volatile political history of the Tibetan people, their current situation and their hopes for the future. After the presentation, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in group discussions. This free event, which is part of the ongoing “Coffee, Tea and Politics” series, is sponsored by the Library’s cultural diversity project and the BCC Center for Liberal Arts.

New Program Brings Cultural Diversity Opportunities
Thanks to the support of a new grant, the Library Media Center is implementing “Let Us Learn Together,” a cultural diversity project for the campus community this year. Funds from the Washington State Library Services and Technology Act will provide improved and expanded library services for a culturally-diverse student population to infuse cultural pluralism into the learning experience at BCC. The new program has many components. A workshop on using the Internet to search for service agencies was conducted in September for the volunteers at the Bellevue Mini City Hall at Crossroads Mall to enhance community outreach and better serve the needs of diverse immigrant populations in the area. Currently, BCC librarians are working with English-as-a-Second-Language faculty to integrate information literacy into their classes. Upcoming opportunities for student, faculty and staff participation include cross-cultural communication workshops, poetry slams, Friday movies and discussions, ethnic music performances and a speaker series. The grant also includes funds for the purchase of books and audio-visual materials that will promote cultural pluralism in the BCC community. Send your recommendations to Director of the Library Media Center Myra Van Vactor or librarian Kate Bradley via campus e-mail.

ESL Classes Participate in Pilot Study
BCC has been selected as an Equipped for the Future (EFF) pilot site for the current academic year. Equipped for the Future is a national standards-based reform initiative from the National Institute for Literacy aimed at improving the quality and outcomes of the adult literacy system. English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) instructor Tom Graham is participating in the EFF Reading Performance Task Development Institute in Cincinnati this week. He will join ESL instructors Nancy McEachran and Jean Lunnemann to pilot the EFF reading assessment tasks and review a draft of the “EFF Teaching and Learning Toolkit.” This valuable work will help build the foundation for a statewide assessment system for Adult Basic Education, General Educational Development (GED) and ESL programs.

Name Changes for Two Campus Departments
Public Safety, formerly Campus Security, incorporated a name change this month to better reflect the expanding role of the department. Among other areas, Public Safety handles reports of campus crime or suspicious activity, traffic safety, emergency medical services, parking enforcement and BCC’s Emergency Preparedness Program. Public Safety expanded services to Factoria and North Campus to better serve the entire college community. Last year, the department responded to over 4,900 calls for service and may break the 7,000-mark for this year. Learn more at http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/campusops/security/public_Safety/clery.htm. BCC Continuing Education has renamed its Personal Enrichment program “Explore” to better reflect the direction and flavor of the new program. Winter quarter offerings that educate and entertain include classes in fine wines, Chinese medicine and acupuncture, understanding health and disease, martial arts and much more! Check the Continuing Education website at http://www.conted.bcc.ctc.edu/ for regular updates. If you have suggestions for new Explore programs or class, contact Cheryll Leo-Gwin via campus e-mail.
