Welcome Back!
Welcome to the 36th academic year
at BCC! Fall quarter gets off to an energizing start when Opening Week
begins tomorrow. After a continental breakfast in the cafeteria, President
Floten will officially welcome back faculty and staff members, introduce
new employees, and share an update of projects and challenges for the
coming year during a speech at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday. During College Issues
Day on Wednesday, you may attend informative sessions on i-BCC, Diversity
and General Education Initiatives, the new degree audit application, accommodating
students with disabilities, and more. Meet BCC’s new staff and faculty
members during a reception for new employees at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday
in the cafeteria. New student orientations take place on Thursday evening
and Friday morning, and a new employee orientation will be held from 9:30
– 11 a.m. on Friday. Celebrate the end of Opening Week with picnic in
the main courtyard from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, courtesy of Student
Programs and Multi-Cultural Services. A complete schedule of events is
available on the BCC Intranet at: http://intranet.bcc.ctc.edu/openingweek/ .
i-BCC Introduces New Employee
Tools and Resources
i-BCC is a campus-wide project
designed to provide employees with a collection of Internet-assisted tools
that will streamline campus processes and allow employees to focus on
critical tasks. You can preview some of the new tools that will be released
by i-BCC team members in the next few months at a campus-wide presentation
at 9 a.m. on Wednesday in the cafeteria. MyBCC is a Web portal that gives
employees one entrance point to locate the tools and resources necessary
for their daily work. Customization features allow employees to add or
reorganize content and change color schemes. Information about upcoming
training workshops for this new resource will be coming soon. The Degree
Audit, an online advising tool that maps college curriculum and student
transcripts, will allow faculty to more easily advise students, as well
as allow students to self-advise and plan their degrees. Try the new application
by visiting the Academic Advising website at http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/advising. Two i-BCC resources are currently available online. The Forms Library,
at http://intranet.bcc.ctc.edu/formslibrary is a complete online repository for all BCC request forms.
The new Technical Assistance Center allows employees to request online
technical assistance from the Computing Services department by visiting
http://tac.bcc.ctc.edu. For more details about these projects, contact Julia McCallum or
Carol Robinson via campus e-mail.
Keeping Up with
Organizational Changes
Updated campus resources can help
keep you in the loop with recent staff changes, office relocations and
organizational changes. Visit http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/mybcc/orgchart to view a chart that reflects recent changes
in BCC’s organizational structure. Campus locator and parking maps have been updated to reflect office
relocations and new facilities. View them online at http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/visitguide/maps. You
can find employee information such as title, e-mail address, telephone
and fax number, and campus address by clicking on http://directory.bcc.ctc.edu. Updates to the online directory will be completed
in the next two weeks. A new printed version of the employee directory
will be available to the campus community in early October. Most department home pages have been updated to reflect
recent organizational changes. If you need assistance updating your home
page, contact Juan Ulloa in Web Services at 564-2487 or via campus e-mail.
BCC Reads! Debuts This Fall
Imagine – if even part of the BCC
community were to read the same book during the academic year, the result
would be hundreds of people with a common intellectual bond. To foster
that goal, BCC Reads!
was created through a coordinated effort by the
BCC Reading and Writing Lab, Professional Development Committee, Library
Media Center and BCC Center for the Liberal Arts.
BCC Reads! is
a new activity whereby interested employees and students will read and
discuss the same book, assign it in class (if appropriate) and plan events
to form a shared intellectual bond and community experience. Consider
taking part in this program by reading Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest
Scientific Problem of his Time by Dava
Sobel. The book, which is available in the BCC Bookstore, was selected
for its broad relevance in history, geography, composition, science and
many other fields. Throughout the coming year, the
BCC Reads! sponsors will circulate suggestions for activities that promote thoughtful
reading and writing. A new website, which will be launched in the next
few weeks, will list reviews, reactions, campus activities and suggested
assignments. As a highlight of the program, author Dava Sobel will visit
the campus to lecture about the book during spring quarter. If you have
ideas or questions about this project – or suggestions for future
BCC Reads! book selections
that have broad appeal and relevance to more than one subject area – please
contact Gordon Leighton or Scott Bessho via campus e-mail.

Volunteer Your Time to Help
Adult Learners
Help students in Adult Basic Education
(ABE) succeed by providing support and encouragement by joining BCC’s
Volunteer Tutor Program. The ABE program provides free programs to help
adult learners improve their reading, writing and math skills, as well
as GED preparation and English-As-A-Second-Language classes. You can make
a real difference by helping students reach their personal and professional
goals. Volunteers are asked to make a six-month commitment of 2-4 hours
per week. Morning, afternoon and evening assignments are available beginning
September 23. Monthly orientation sessions for prospective volunteers
are held on the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30 - 7 p.m. in room
R108. For more information, contact Tess HelesHunt, program manager, at
564-2349 or via campus e-mail.
In Brief
Please send small HP, Lexmark and
Cannon used, refillable inkjet cartridges to coach Stella Orechia in the
Athletics Office (G100C) or drop them off in boxes located in campus division
offices. Proceeds from the cartridges support scholarships for the BCC
men’s and women’s cross country teams. If you have questions, contact
Stella Orechia at 564-2353 or via campus e-mail.
Now you can fuel up with delicious coffee and
snacks at the north end of campus! Stop by the new coffee shop in Building
R to enjoy espresso drinks, Tully’s coffee, sandwiches and pastries beginning
September 23 (7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 2
p.m. Friday).
Movers & Shakers
Congratulations to faculty and staff
on these recent accomplishments:
Neil Evans, Peter Saflund and Manjari Wijenaike of the NWCET
have co-authored an article titled “Converging Universes: New Models for
IT Professional Certification and Academic Credentials” in the current
issue of Certification
Magazine. Read the article online at
http://www.certmag.com/issues/sep02/feature_evans.cfm.
Let’s hear it for efficiency!
Director of Evaluations and Assessment Matt Groshong reports that the conversion to walk-in assessment in the
Assessment Office
has resulted in a 48% increase in the number students assessed over the
same time last year. The upcoming addition of six computers will increase
the capacity of the lab by 20% in anticipation of a possible change to
mandatory assessment.
Emily Coward,
Outreach Worker for WorkFirst, is a member of the Seattle Symphony and
Seattle Symphony Chorale. Last week, she took part in the “Rolling Requiem”
at Safeco Field with a performance of Mozart’s Requiem in remembrance
of those who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11. Emily and
her group were joined by choirs and orchestras around the world who performed
the Requiem at 8:46 a.m. in their time zone, creating a rolling performance
of the Requiem that traveled around the world. Emily was featured in a
front-page photo of the New York Times online
newspaper. See the photo online at http://staff.washington.edu/dbratton/workshop/emily_nytimes.gif
BCC Television Services staff and students and recent graduates of the Video Advanced Track program
produced a live broadcast on September 11 of the Bellevue Philharmonic
Orchestra and the Seattle Choral Society participating in the “9/11 Rolling
Requiem” event. The broadcast originated from Bellevue Square Mall and
was available for viewing over the College Channel. Funding for the live
hook-up came from the City of Bellevue as part of BCC’s ongoing relationship
to share production support and facilities with the city. If you’d like
to see the performance, contact TV Services Director Rick Otte at 564-4137
or via campus e-mail.
Leslie Lum,
faculty in the Business Division, is on sabbatical working and teaching
at the University of Washington (UW) School of Business for the next two
quarters. She is working on a knowledge management system that will allow
the UW Business and Economic Development Program (BEDP) to be replicated
in other colleges. The BEDP teams student consultants with historically
underserved businesses. Over its seven-year life, the program has generated
$6 million in revenues and retained or created over 200 jobs. It is anticipated
that the model will be extended to the developing Bellevue Entrepreneur
Center (where BCC is partnering with the City of Bellevue, Small Business
Association, University of Washington, Port of Seattle and local businesses)
to assist minority- and women-owned businesses on the Eastside.
