Tibetan Scholar to Teach This Fall
Tibetan scholar Nawang Dorjee will join the faculty as BCC’s inaugural
“Scholar in Residence” as part of BCC’s new Center for Liberal Arts program.
Dorjee, a renowned Tibetan educator and Director of the Tibetan Children’s
Village in Dharamsala, India, will share his knowledge of Tibetan culture
and history with students, faculty, staff and community members as a teacher
and guest lecturer during his nine-month tenure at BCC. During fall quarter,
Dorjee will teach “Humanities 228: Modern Tibetan History and Culture.”
He will also speak to campus and community groups, and meet weekly with
faculty and staff members to study texts and discuss topics in a campus
learning community. To learn more about the Scholar in Residence program
or to join the learning community, contact Executive Director Diane Douglas
at 564-2550 or via campus e-mail.
Campus Event Brings Alums Back to
BCC
Last month, nearly one hundred alumni – dating from the 1960’s
to the present – returned to BCC to reconnect with the college. Over
dinner and music performed by members of the BCC Jazz Band, former students
listened to a campus update by interim Dean of Student Services Tika Esler,
viewed a video with reflections from current BCC faculty and staff, and
answered trivia questions about the college. Some guests toured the expanded
campus, while others enjoyed viewing historical photos of the college. All
alumni were encouraged to stay involved with the life of the college in
the future and to become active in the BCC Alumni Association. You
can see highlights of the event, which was a collaboration between Student
Programs, ASBCC Student Government, Institutional Advancement and the
BCC Alumni Association, on the Web at http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/alumni/reception02/.
Master Plan Provides
Preview of Campus’ Physical Future
Would you like to learn more about
the physical growth of the college planned for the next decade? Now you
can read BCC’s Master Plan, a document that details the current physical
environment of the campus and future construction and expansion plans
for 2002-2012, on the Web at www.bcc.ctc.edu/visitguide/masterplan.htm
The plan addresses issues of growth to accommodate
more students, the need for an environment that supports instructional
goals, and the importance of maintaining the open spaces, character and
architecture of the campus. Construction projects proposed for the next
decade include a new student parking garage, a major renovation of Building
D, construction of a new science and technology facility, and consideration
of satellite campuses.
Banner First Year
for TRIO
TRIO Student Support Services helped many students succeed
during the first year of program implementation at BCC. TRIO program
participants receive academic assistance through tutoring and study skills
classes, educational planning and advising services through the federally-funded
program. These support services paid off – 50% of approximately 160 TRIO
participants improved their grade point averages (GPA) in winter and spring
quarters. During spring quarter, 18 TRIO participants received a
perfect 4.0 GPA and 12 students were named to Phi Theta Kappa, the college’s
academic honor society.
More Changes to
BCC Campus
Beautification and campus improvement projects continue
this summer. In front of Building B, ivy beds have been removed and new
landscape beds and a curved stairway that extends from Building B to the
courtyard are being installed over the next few weeks. The project will
be completed in mid-August, and the detour in front of Building B should
be removed within two weeks. As part of the reconfiguration of Parking
Lot 7, the City of Bellevue will replace water valves on Landerholm Circle.
This project will temporarily reduce access to the main college entrance
at Landerholm Circle and 148th Ave S.E. on Friday. Two southbound
lanes coming into BCC will be closed just past the Texaco station. However,
a construction crew will direct one lane into and one lane out of the
entrance to campus at Landerholm Circle. On July 21-23, the Landerholm
Circle entrance will be completely closed from 8:30 p.m. – 6 a.m. to continue
work on the City of Bellevue reconfiguration project. For more details,
please contact Capital Projects Manager Don Bloom at 564-2491 or via campus
e-mail.
Serve, Learn, and Lead Succeeds
It was a very successful second year for BCC’s “Serve, Learn,
and Lead” project, which is funded by a grant from the American Association
of Community Colleges to incorporate service learning into the curriculum.
During the past academic year, 14 faculty members worked with 339 students,
who served at 54 local community agencies. BCC students logged over 5,000
hours of community service this year with a diverse range of projects.
Students created a website to promote anti-hate messages after the September
terrorist attacks and produced tobacco cessation brochures for King County
public health clinics. Other student groups assembled toys for the Giving
Tree, created financial planning tools for residents of HopeLink, worked
on a stream restoration project for the City of Bellevue – and much more.
This summer, faculty members Scott Bessho, Rob Viens and Virginia Bridwell
are incorporating service learning components into summer quarter class
projects. For more information, visit www.bcc.ctc.edu/servicelearning or contact
Service Learning Faculty Liaison Shairose Gulamani or Project Director
Toni S. Hartsfield via campus e-mail.
Nominate an Outstanding Classified
Employee
Do you know a classified employee who demonstrates outstanding work performance,
shows dedication to the college’s mission and contributes to the professional
development of all classified staff at BCC? If so, nominate that person
for the Staff Training for Technical and Community Colleges (STTACC) Exemplary
Staff Award! The annual awards will be given to classified employees from
community colleges throughout the state at the STACC Summer Conference
in Ocean Shores July 29-31. To request a nomination form or more information,
contact Joan Miller at 564-2322 or via campus e-mail.
Movers & Shakers
Congratulations to faculty, staff and students on these recent
accomplishments:
- Kudos to the staff of Student Information Technology
Services, Student Service Center, Bookstore and Cashiering for their
success with BCC’s Virtual Bookstore project. During winter and spring
quarter, over 2,500 students were able to register and purchase books
online. Nearly 150 payments are processed per day and over 4,300 books
were sold online in the last two quarters.
- Vice President for Workforce Development Paula
Boyum, was recently named President-Elect
of the National Council for Continuing Education and Training, an affiliate
council of the American Association of Community Colleges. Next year,
she will serve her first year as president of this national organization.
- Business Division instructors Judith Paquette
and Leslie Lum received a “Return to Industry” grant to assist in
the development of local company Expedia's financial intranet, which
provides financial and accounting services to employees. As part of
the assignment, Judith and Leslie interviewed several members of Expedia’s
finance team and benchmarked Expedia's financial intranet against those
of other local companies such as Microsoft, Costco, Voicestream and
Boeing. BCC students also participated in the project. Student interns,
who received advance training and knowledge of the financial system
from the instructors, were able to start their assignments with very
little orientation from Expedia and complete projects within a short
time frame. Members of the Business Division believe that this model,
which saves the company valuable time training students or matching
assignments to the intern, can be replicated in other companies.
- Betty Kaczynski, director of the Early Learning,
Family, and Childcare Center, received the Hero of Early Childhood Education
Award recently from the Eastside branch of the National Association
for the Education of Young Children. Betty was honored for efforts at
BCC’s new childcare center and many other contributions in the field
of early childhood education. Her colleague Judy Witmer, faculty member
in Parent Education and Early Childhood Education, also received the
award this year.
- Instructor Debra Griggs has become an IC³
authorized instructor. She recently completed three examinations covering
hardware, operating systems, Internet use and privacy, and generic software
applications – and will share her advanced knowledge with students in
the Administrative Office Systems.
