BCC Summer Kids Camps for Fun &
Learning BCC Kids Camp --Toddlers and children will enjoy fun learning opportunities during BCC Kids Camp, which offers sessions from June 24 - August 8. Toddlers and preschool children will enjoy music, movement, hands-on discovery learning and outdoor play, while children entering kindergarten through second grade focus on science, art and age-appropriate discovery activities. Call the Early Childhood Education Department at 564-2366 to register or for additional details. BCC Athletics will sponsor baseball camps and lessons for 8 - 18 year-olds from July to September. Kids will stay active while honing baseball skills. For more details, call the Athletics Department at 564-2356. BCC Science Summer Camp for 5th and 6th grade students takes place August 12-16. Students will explore the mystery and wonder of science with hands-on learning activities in biology, chemistry, geology and more. Some need-based financial assistance will be available. The Kids@BCC Summer Program offers fun classes in the arts, computers, world languages, personal enrichment, science and more August 12-16 on the main BCC campus. Judy Witmer, faculty member in Parent Education and Early Childhood Education, was honored by the Eastside branch of the National Association for the Education of Young Children last week. She received the Hero of Early Childhood Education Award for her many contributions in curriculum and course development and her extensive knowledge of the early childhood education field. Interior Design student Abigail Gelotte recently won the national ACCESS Design Competition sponsored by the American Society of Interior Designers. Abigail designed a creative solution for working people who lose valuable time away from home and family during the daily commute. Abigail’s project features the “You Away From You” robot that can be programmed with a special device to tackle household cleaning and tasks while an individual rides the train to and from work. Staff from over 350 community radio stations attended the National Federation of Community Broadcasters Convention in Charlottesville, Virginia last month. Steve sat on a panel that addressed university and institutional licensed stations at the convention. Steve also shared marketing and policy information with members of local non-profit groups at the Eastside Arts Coalition marketing and public relations workshop a few weeks ago. Toni Hartsfield and Shairose Gulamani with BCC’s Serve, Learn and Lead Project welcomed visitors from the American Association of Community Colleges and the Community College of Aurora a few weeks ago. The guests toured the BCC campus, visited two community agency services sites and helped project staff set future service learning goals. Coming Attractions
Student Art Exhibition - Stop by the BCC Library Gallery to see paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and more from promising BCC student artists. The show runs today through September 30. Drama Performance -BCC drama students present “The Italian American Reconciliation,” a light-hearted modern rendition of the Romeo and Juliet story. Take in a performance at 8 p.m. on May 16-18 and May 23-25 in the Stop Gap Theatre, Room E101. Tickets are $2. For more information, call 564-3114. Family Day at Remlinger Farms - BCC’s Parent Education department sponsors a day of fun for the entire family at Remlinger Farms in Carnation on May 18. Children will enjoy roller coaster steam train rides, puppet show, hay mazes, animal rides and more. Mention that you are a BCC employee and pay a reduced $7 admission. Vocal Jazz Invitational - Hear performances by “Celebration,” BCC’s vocal jazz ensemble, and jazz choirs from Nathan Hale, Thomas Jefferson and Olympic High Schools at 7 p.m. on May 21 in the Carlson Theatre. Noted jazz vocalist Kathy Kosins, who was described as having “one of the most alluring voices in jazz” by the Chicago Tribune, will also perform. Tickets are $7 adults, $5 students and seniors. Lecture: Dr. Evelyn Hu-DeHart - Noted multicultural scholar Dr. Evelyn Hu-DeHart will speak on “Redefining America: The Practice and Politics of Multiculturalism” at 7 p.m. on May 22 in the BCC Gymnasium. She is a history professor, chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies and Director of the Center for Studies of Ethnicity and Race in America at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is also founder of the Asian/Pacific American Women's Leadership Institute. Dr. Hu-DeHart lectures widely on politics and contemporary affairs; race, ethnic and gender relations and issues; multicultural education and the politics of multiculturalism; ethnic studies and curriculum reform; and recruitment and retention of students and faculty of color. She has testified before the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and appeared on the “McNeil-Lehrer News Hour” among other television and radio programs. This event is free and open to the public. Rescheduled: Parent Education Lecture - The Parent Education Department presents “Young Children and Visual Media: Impact on Young Brains," a lecture by Gloria DeGaetano at 7 p.m. on May 29 in the Carlson Theatre. DeGaetano is the author of the book Screen Smarts: A Family Guide to Media Literacy. Tickets, which are $10, are available by calling the Parent Education office at 564-2366. Jazz Band Invitational - Take in the swinging sounds of jazz by BCC’s renowned Jazz Band and performances by the Kentwood and Kentridge High School bands at 7:30 p.m. on May 30 in the Carlson Theatre. American Sign Language Performance - In support of a new American Sign Language (ASL) Club, BCC ASL instructors, interpreters, students and alumni will perform during an evening of ASL storytelling, poetry and musical interpretations at 7:30 p.m. on May 30. Food Faire and Carnival - The Early Learning, Family, and Childcare Center hosts its annual family event from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on June 1. Enjoy fun activities with children’s music entertainer Nancy Stewart, as well as games for children, cooking demonstrations and product samples. Think First of Washington will distribute free helmets for children and discuss bike and scooter safety.
