WorkFirst Celebrates a Successful Partnership
On April 1, BCC's WorkFirst staff helped celebrate the opening of the Boys and Girls Club at Spiritwood Manor, a King County Housing Authority neighborhood. The event focused on the successful community partnerships that BCC and other local agencies have formed with Spiritwood Manor residents over the last year. Attendees of the event, including Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn, Bellevue Mayor Connie Marshall and King County Councilwoman Jane Hague among other community leaders, were impressed with BCC's WorkFirst outreach efforts to residents of the 129-unit apartment complex. Outreach to these low-income families has resulted in increased awareness and participation in BCC’s English-as-a-Second-Language, Computer Training, and occupational programs. When WorkFirst staff first contacted residents of this neighborhood last March, four Spiritwood Manor residents were enrolled in BCC classes. Last quarter, less than one year later, 43 residents were enrolled in BCC programs.

In the News
Student Osama Parvez had a mission - to “do something good for the people out there” after the terrorist attacks of September 11. First, he organized the first BCC chapter of UNICEF on campus last fall. Then, after much contact and legwork, he’s helped organized a UNICEF benefit concert by Junoon, one of South Asia’s most popular rock bands, in early May. Parvez’s story and the upcoming Junoon concert were featured in the Seattle Times on Saturday  (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/134435933_bcckid13m.html)

and the Eastside Journal on Thursday (http://www.eastsidejournal.com/sited/story/html/88644).

On April 6, the Eastside Journal mentioned BCC among the finalists for the Eastside Business Awards. Read more online at: http://www.eastsidejournal.com/sited/story/html/88218
