State
Commends BCC for Educational Performance
BCC received a
Certificate of Commendation from the Washington State Board for Community
and Technical Colleges for exceeding all three of its Performance
Reporting targets for the 1999-2001 biennium. The state board monitors
community college performance in three areas: preparing students to
transfer to four-year institutions, preparing students to move directly
into the workforce and achievement of certain skill levels by students
in Adult Basic Education and English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) programs.
In the two-year period, BCC prepared 3,088 graduates for transfer
to a four-year institution, 8 percent more than it had targeted and
the highest number among all community college in the state. BCC prepared
604 students to move directly into the workforce, 27 percent more
than targeted. In addition, 62 percent of BCC's Adult Basic Education
and ESL students met targeted skill levels, 7 percentage points above
target.
TRIO
Debuts at BCC
The new TRIO Student
Support Services program will provide advising, individual and group tutoring,
study skills training and other tools to help students succeed at BCC.
According to a national survey, students who participate in TRIO programs
have higher graduation and transfer rates, higher grade point averages
and are less likely to drop out of college. The federally-funded program
will serve a minimum of 160 eligible BCC students. To qualify for the
program, a student must be a U.S. citizen and meet one of the following
criteria: a first-generation college student (neither parent has a bachelor's
degree), be financially disadvantaged, or have a documented disability.
For more details, contact Director of TRIO Student Support Services Barbara
Brodsky at 564-2207 or via campus e-mail.
Kudos
for WorkFirst Partnership
For the second year
in a row, the Eastside Local Planning Area Partnership, which includes
the WorkFirst programs at Bellevue, Lake Washington and Cascadia community
colleges, has been recognized as the state's top performing welfare reform
partnership. The office had the highest employment retention, highest
child support collections, second highest caseload reduction and second
lowest return by people to the welfare roles. The partnership received
an $80,000 high performance award from Governor Gary Locke during a recognition
ceremony in Olympia last month. Other local organizations honored in this
partnership include King Eastside Community Services Office, Worksource
Bellevue, Hopelink, Workforce Development Council's Welfare to Work Program,
Jewish Family Services and Washington Post Labor Exchange.
