Governor Visits BCC Tomorrow
Governor Gary Locke will make a
brief visit to campus tomorrow morning to help illustrate the need for
new spending for state construction projects. The Governor is visiting
a number of community colleges throughout the state to gain media attention
and public support for his decision to release some previously approved
construction funds for higher education projects. Vice President of Administrative
Services Barbara Martin will lead the Governor on a tour of the proposed
Building A renovations approved in the 2001-03 state budget. The projects
have been on "pause" as a result of lower than projected state income.
The Governor wants to get projects started at community colleges as a
boost for local economies. He will hold a question and answer session
with the news media at 11 a.m. For more details, contact Director of Media
Relations Bob Adams at 564-3081.
BCC Offers ‘Jump Start’ for
Unemployed Workers
On Saturday, staff from Continuing Education, Career Center, Fast
Track and Worker Retraining held “Jump Start Your Career”, an event to
provide job-seekers and individuals facing layoffs with information about
state retraining programs, availability of financial aid and access to
free career planning services in the BCC Career Center. Information was
also available on BCC’s Fast Track and short-term certificate programs.
BCC currently offers over 35 programs requiring just three to nine months
of study to prepare students for careers in fields such as information
technology, real estate, digital animation and graphics, paraprofessional
accounting and more. Over 70 people attended the three-hour information
session.
Liberal Arts Center Proposed
for BCC
BCC has plans to create a world-class center for the liberal arts
on campus. The vision of the center is to serve as a national model for
effective liberal arts education by providing an opportunity to create
stronger, more powerful ways of presenting education, building upon new
knowledge about learning and incorporating the skill-sets that have been
defined by employers as essential for all employees. The center will expand
upon BCC’s model interdisciplinary studies programs, award-winning performing
and fine arts, and innovative instructional methods. Diane Douglas, current
executive director of the Bellevue Art Museum, will head the project.
Her first task will be to facilitate the development and implementation
of a strategic vision for the center when she joins the college in February.
Along with faculty and staff, Diane will develop significant and innovative
education programs, activities and events that showcase liberal arts and,
at the same time, strengthen the teaching and learning experience.
Employees Give Generously
to Social Service Organizations
Thanks to the generosity of many BCC employees, this
year’s Combined Giving Fund Drive was a success! Nearly $30,000
was collected during the November fund drive, topping last year’s donations
by $2,000. Employees supported organizations such as Northwest Harvest,
World Concern, BCC Foundation, Northwest Kidney Center Foundation and
the American Red Cross. You may still participate. Contact Fran Fender
via campus e-mail for more details.
Temporary Outage Will Boost
KBCS Signal
KBCS will be off the air for most
of the daylight hours on Tuesday, December 18. Loyal listeners need not
worry - the temporary outage will result in permanent improvements. In
the ongoing effort to improve its signal and coverage in the region, a
new broadcast antenna will be installed that day to extend the station’s
signal. Contractors will scale the KBCS tower, which is located between
Houses 1 and 2 on the northeast edge of campus, to install a new antenna.
The new signal may result in interference with telephones, computer speakers
or other communication equipment in some areas of campus. If you experience
interference from KBCS after December 18, please contact KBCS General
Manager Steve Ramsey at 564-2418.
