Celebrate Our New Facility
Join the celebration today to mark the official opening of Building R, the largest instructional facility in BCC’s 35 year history! A brief ceremony in the Building L lobby will be held at 2 p.m. to recognize and thank the many individuals and organizations involved in the planning, funding and construction of the new, energy-efficient building. Following an outdoor ribbon-cutting ceremony, you can enjoy music and refreshments in the lobby of Building R. Tours of the new 72,000-square-foot facility will highlight both instructional and environmental features. You can see displays from various campus departments, student clubs and the architectural firm that designed the building. For more details, contact Facilities Events Manager Jamie Dye at 564-4050.

Students Vote for Parking Solution
When the final results were tallied, students who participated in last week’s election voted nearly 3-1 in favor of a new student-funded parking garage. Construction of a 625-space garage, which will provide much needed student parking on the expanding campus, could begin next summer and wrap up in 2003. The project will be funded through a per-credit student fee and additional college funds. A portion of the student fee will also subsidize bus passes. This year, an additional 100 people purchased bus passes on campus as compared to figures for the previous fall. To help with traffic congestion, all students and employees are encouraged to find alternate forms of transportation such as taking the bus, carpooling or biking to campus.

BCC Departments Team Up for “Entrepreneur University”
The first of 10 BCC College Channel cable TV shows based on “Entrepreneur University,” a recent two-day educational event sponsored by the Northwest Venture Group, featured a presentation by Governor Gary Locke last week. The TV series is a joint project of the Television Services department and the Washington Small Business Development Center at BCC. In his presentation, Governor Locke praised the entrepreneurial spirit in Washington state and called for a coordinated system to assist entrepreneurs. Last month, Entrepreneur University brought together the region's top business leaders, venture capitalists and investors to teach the essential skills of developing a new business. Future segments of Entrepreneur University on the College Channel will feature experts on various topics that are crucial to business success, such as acquiring financing, writing business plans and marketing. The College Channel, channel 28, is shown on AT&T Cable in all areas of King County, except Seattle, and now reaches 340,000 local households.

New Antenna Expands Reach of KBCS
The signal strength of KBCS 91.3 FM should improve significantly by the end of the year as a result of a federal grant to install a new omni-directional antenna. The $8,300 grant, paying half the project cost, was awarded by the Public Telecommunications Facilities Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce, which funds public broadcasting projects designed to build new facilities or upgrade equipment. KBCS will provide the remaining funds. Areas that will benefit most from this upgrade include Shoreline and cities north of the Seattle city limits. However, areas in central Seattle, Renton and communities farther south also should receive an improved signal with the new antenna. A stronger signal will bring the station’s unique mix of music to more people, as well as increasing a base of donor support. Last week, KBCS completed a successful fundraising drive, raising over $56,000 in less than a week to support operating revenues.

Marching Toward Equity
Earlier this week, the Washington Federation of Teachers presented a certificate of recognition to Jean Floten, recognizing BCC's progress toward equity in pay and benefits for part-time faculty. BCC ranked second among the state's 34 community and technical colleges in terms of efforts to promote equity. The award was presented at a media event in Seattle on October 29. On average in Washington state, the Federation said, part-time instructors are at approximately 55 percent of equity with full-time instructors, a significant improvement over the past four years.

Movers & Shakers

Earlier this week, Director of Disability Support Services Susan Gjolmesli served as a panelist for the “United We Stand - Understanding Through Experience” event in honor of Disability Employment Awareness Month in October. The panelists discussed accommodations, daily experiences, rehabilitation and work place challenges for people with disabilities. The event was sponsored by the Attorney General Office’s Diversity Advisory Committee.

Diagnostic Ultrasound Program Chair Ann Polin, who’s back on campus after a one-year sabbatical in Ghana, and students Paula Husky and Jim Brown trounced the competition with a first-place victory in a college sonography tournament. The tournament was held during an annual diagnostic medical sonography conference in Las Vegas last month.

With assistance from science instructor Rob Viens, 12 BCC students are participating in King County’s “Salmon Watcher” program through the end of December. The students are monitoring Eastside streams and identifying returning salmon to provide valuable environmental data to the City of Bellevue.

Two BCC Art faculty members are showcasing their talent around town! Dale Lindman is exhibiting his paintings at the Foster/White Gallery, 123 S. Jackson in Seattle’s Pioneer Square district, from November 1 - 29.
