New Grants Support
Child Care Center
The college received
two new grants last month that will provide continuing funding for
the new Early Learning, Family, and Childcare Center. A four-year,
$72,000 grant from the Department of Education will provide staff
training for childcare workers, nursing visits for children of low-income
parents, and parent education and advocacy for low-income parents.
A grant from the Washington Department of Community, Trade and Economic
Development provides $25,000 to equip the kitchen at the new childcare
center. The Early Learning, Family, and Childcare Center is scheduled
to open next spring on the north end of campus.
Program
Growth for International Student Services
For the first time
in the department's history, International Student Services enrollment
will top 500 students this year. The expansion represents a 9% increase
in enrollment from 2000-01 and a 20% increase from the 1999-2000 academic
year. Students from 65 different countries attend BCC to earn college
credit to transfer to a four-year university or to study diverse career
fields in professional and technical training programs through International
Student Services. Congratulations to the members of International Student
Services for their hard work and ongoing efforts to help international
students adjust to their new home at BCC.
Student Groups Join for
Relief Efforts
The International
Student Association, Campus Activities Board, Phi Theta Kappa honor society
and ASBCC student government association have joined forces to raise funds
for the September 11 relief efforts. You may donate cash or spare change
for the American Red Cross at the Campus Information Center (C106) or
ASBCC office (C212). Give new or like new teddy bears to the victims'
families at donation boxes in rooms C106, C212 or C225 in the Student
Union Building. Donations of cash or teddy bears will be collected until
October 26. You may also purchase a "United We Stand" t-shirt
for $20 at the Campus Information Center. Proceeds will support the Red
Cross and ASBCC's "Hate Free BCC" committee to fund educational
events and awareness programs.
i-BCC
Update
Several i-BCC projects
are underway. A vendor for the BCC portal has been selected. Implementation
of the portal product will take place in November and December. An information
technology and media advising tool has been updated to include degrees
and certificates for the 2001-2002 and 2000-2001 academic years. The tool
helps students and advisors know which courses are needed to complete
the degree or certificate. You can see more at www.bcc.ctc.edu/eval. Art
Goss and the curriculum committee have been working on the general education
outcomes tracking project. This quarter, faculty are rating each course
at BCC in each of 18 general education areas. In order to provide faculty
with a Web-based version for completing the ratings, an online submission
form http://intranet.bcc.ctc.edu/ibcc/temp/form_d.asp
was created. For more details on any of these projects, contact i-BCC
Project Manager Julia McCallum at 564-2283 or via campus e-mail.
Keep Updated
at College Issues Day
Attend informational
seminars and learn about the latest BCC activities during College Issues
Day on Friday. The day will begin with a brief overview of current events
and an update on college initiatives at 8:45 a.m. in the cafeteria.
The remainder of College Issues Day has been separated into two tracks.
The first track provides time to focus on general education requirements
and rating of courses and advising. Later that afternoon, divisions
and programs will have time to work on both of these initiatives. The
second track offers options for professional development in the areas
of time management, managing change, customer service and more. The
college is closed to the public so that all employees may participate
in the day's events.
BCC Partners for Community Discussions
BCC has joined other
local community groups to present a series of free panels called "Eleventh:
Bellevue Unites Through Conversation," which will be offered on
the 11th of every month for the next few months. Akemi Matsumoto, counselor
and instructor in the Counseling Center, moderated a discussion on diversity
with community and religious leaders called "We Are All Americans:
Bellevue's Cultural Perspectives on the Tragedy" on October 11
at the Bellevue Art Museum. If you would like to help plan the discussions
or get details about future panels, contact Helen Taylor or Suzy Lepeintre
via campus e-mail.
KBCS Seeks Membership Pladges
The KBCS fall membership
drive begins on Thursday, October 25th at 6 a.m. and ends as soon as
the station raises $55,000. Call 564-2424 with your pledge of support.
In addition to providing support for the station, you may take home
a thank you gift like a compact disc, a KBCS t-shirt or a handmade coffee
mug. Go to www.kbcs-fm.org and click on "Special Premiums Available"
on the home page to see more. KBCS 91.3fm is a listener-supported radio
station, with programming produced by a dedicated group of over 80 community
volunteers. If you'd like to learn more about the current activities
or future plans of the station, contact KBCS General Manager Steve Ramsey
at 564-2418.
Prepare
for Winter Conditions
Do you know how
to find out if BCC is closed because of adverse weather conditions
this winter? To learn about campus closure due to weather or other
emergency conditions, use one of the following options: listen for
school closure announcements on local radio or television news, call
(425) 401-6680 for a recorded message, or check the BCC website at
http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/schoolclosure.
Keep these resources handy so you'll be prepared for a possible college
closure.
Event
Benefits Fitness and Scholarships
BCC fitness enthusiasts
are invited to participate in the BCC cross country teams' annual
"run-a-thon." You can get some exercise and support BCC
teams at the same time. The event takes place at Bellevue's Larsen
Lake, 148th and Main Street, at 1 p.m. on November 1. Runners and
walkers complete a one-mile loop as many times as they can in one
hour. Sponsors donate per mile or a flat amount, and proceeds will
be used to fund athletic scholarships for cross country team members.
For more details, contact coach Stella Orechia at 564-2353 or via
campus e-mail.
