Consortium Director Susan Quattrociocchi is on a mission to teach students,
parents and educators in Washington about the benefits and necessary
preparation for a college education. She tours the state training educators
and presenting workshops for parents on > cost-cutting options and
factors that may enhance future academic success in college. Her informative
and entertaining resource booklet, "Did Somebody Say College: How
to Reduce the High Costs and High Risks of After-High School Education,"
was distributed to every eighth and ninth grade public school student
over the last two years. The publication provides insight into choosing
a meaningful career and presents cost-effective higher learning options
such as Tech Prep, Running Start and other community college programs.
Susan also produces a monthly issue-oriented newsletter for educators,
parents, high school counselors and career specialists. Her projects
are funded through various state grants. For more details, contact Susan
Quattrociocchi at 564-3148 or via campus e-mail. Campus Support and Education for Breast Cancer Awareness October is Breast
Cancer Awareness Month. To show their support and commitment, over
40 BCC employees and family members participated in the Komen Foundation
"Race for the Cure" event in Seattle last month to raise
funds and awareness for breast cancer research. Education efforts
continue on the BCC campus. Working under a grant from the Komen Foundation,
Student Health Center staff will offer demonstrations on breast self-exam
to students, staff, faculty and visitors every Thursday in October.
Learn more about the risks and early detection methods from 10 - 11:30
a.m. on the following days: October 4 (B Building upper level), October
11 (cafeteria), October 18 (L Building lobby) and October 25 (B Building
upper level). For more details, contact Margaret Ann Van Bodegom at
564-2480 or via campus e-mail. Campus Beautification Continues With each passing
year, the campus grows more beautiful. Currently, Campus Operations
staff members are working on the main courtyard landscape renovation.
At the southern end of the courtyard in front of Building A, ivy beds
are being replaced with a new seating area. A new grassy mound will
feature plants, benches and a curved element that highlights a new
holiday tree. The area will be wheelchair accessible. You'll be able
to relax and enjoy this new area within the next few weeks. Additional
renovations will take place in the south courtyard later this year.
On the northern end of campus, plans are underway for new artwork
in front of Building R. The "Ring of Fire" honors the geological
wonders of active volcanoes in our region. The new artwork includes
a central gazebo that features a laser-cut design of flowing lava
in the roof. During the day, natural light will highlight the design,
and sunlight will cast an image on the pavement below. At night, a
red light will illuminate the pattern. A series of plaques will surround
the gazebo and reference the Ring of Fire. The installation should
be complete next spring. Update Your Information Online The BCC faculty
and staff directory is now available on the Intranet.
The online directory is updated twice a month. Please take a
moment some time during October to check your online directory entry
for accuracy. E-mail your corrections to the directory update mailbox,
or mail your changes to BCC Publications, room D175. The next printed
directory, which draws from the online database, will be distributed
in November and will reflect new faculty and staff office changes
in Building R. Share the Road, Share the Rida Today is a great
day to consider carpooling, vanpooling or taking an alternative
form of transportation to work. Sharing the ride has some great
benefits - you can catch up on your reading, meet new people or
just enjoy letting someone else do the driving. Metro presents "Rideshare
Week" on October 15 - 19 to encourage commuters to try new
options and even win prizes like a sailing trip, autographed baseball
or gift certificate. BCC offers a $20 discount on bus passes for
all employees and students. To learn about bus schedules, bicycle
routes or rideshare options, contact Lois Harrison via campus e-mail
or visit www.rideshareonline.com on the Web. Coming Attractions Take in these great, free events in October and November
