in Guatemala This Summer BCC Students in Action ? Making Waves - Five BCC students received the Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (WAVE) this spring. The scholarship award, which is based on occupational proficiency, leadership and community service, covers tuition for six quarters of undergraduate study. Congratulations to students June Hanley, Peggy Clark (nursing), Julie King, Kelly Tivnan (interior design), and Meifoon Lui (accounting). ? Making Community Connections - Members of the Delta Epsilon Chi (DEC) marketing and community service club made sandwiches and sack lunches to benefit the Union Gospel Mission in Seattle last quarter. Students raised funds or gave personal donations to purchase necessary food supplies. The timing was perfect - the homeless shelter needed extra donations after their kitchen was damaged during the February earthquake. Shakers ? Counseling Center faculty member Sharon Felton journeys to South Africa next week to provide career counseling training for educators, and church and business leaders in Johannesburg. Sharon and three local colleagues will train professionals how to use Dr. Bernard Haldane’s “Dependable Strengths” method to uncover an individual’s skills and talents. The goal of the project is to enhance strengths and reduce unemployment in South Africa. Sharon will provide this training on campus during the summer. ? Director of Student Programs Toni Hartsfield was recently awarded the 2000-2001 Lori Rhett Professional Award from the Council of Unions and Student Programs. The award, which recognizes directors throughout the state for outstanding service in their field, is named in honor of the late Lori Rhett, past Director of Student Programs at BCC. ? Jeff Cofer, American Studies program chair and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) advisor, received the Robert Giles Distinguished Advisor Award at an international PTK convention in March. Jeff is one of only 30 advisors throughout the nation to win this award. Jeff was the recipient of the PTK Paragon Award for New Advisors for the past two years. ?

Center, was named the classified staff association’s “Employee of
the Month” for April! Co-workers raved about Larry - here’s a sampling: ? Faculty member Nancy Gonlin was invited to present her paper, “What Women & Men Do: Recent Research on Ancient Households in Copan, Honduras,” at the Society for American Archaeology annual meeting in New Orleans last month. Nancy’s work is part of a growing field that examines gender studies and household archaeology. ? Art instructor Pat De Caro recently received a six-week artist residency from the Ragdale Foundation. Pat will spend part of the summer drawing and painting along with other artists, writers and composers at a private residence in the Chicago area. May Activities - So Many Events, So Little Time….. ? Wetlands Restoration Project - Volunteers are still needed to help restore the Reid Wetlands south of Bellevue’s Kelsey Creek Park tomorrow from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Join BCC students, employees and members of the City of Bellevue’s “Stream Team” to restore and protect our beautiful wetlands! Tools and gloves will be provided.
