Top Students
Will Be Honored in Olympia
Students Coleen DeLeon and Sara Needleman-Carlton,
BCC’s representatives to the All-Washington Academic Team, will be
honored by Governor Gary Locke in a ceremony in Olympia next week.
The All Academic Team is a prestigious annual competition that recognizes
the outstanding academic and service contributions of community college
students. Coleen DeLeon emigrated from the Philippines and hopes to
return there one day as a heart surgeon. She is the vice president
of the campus Phi Theta Kappa honor society and International Student
Association, and is an active volunteer at the UW Medical Center and
Issaquah Senior Center. Sara Needleman-Carlton is the BCC student
government president, the campus student recycling coordinator and
president of Phi Theta Kappa’s Greater Northwest Region. She is considering
a career in non-profit management or grassroots activism and performs
volunteer work for the Eastside Baby Corner, the Boeing holiday gift
drive and America Reads program. Congratulations to these outstanding
students!

Spring Events
from Art-Zones
Continuing Education’s Art-Zones program offers two free events for
aspiring writers and photographers in March. Microsoft researcher
Bill Hill presents an insightful, realistic look at the potential
of “eBooks,” an electronic method of book publication, from 6:30 -
9:30 p.m. on March 28 in room N201. eBooks are valuable tools for
new writers - or even seasoned authors like Stephen King - to reach
an audience instantly by publishing their work for a low cost on the
Internet. Photography enthusiasts will enjoy a presentation of digital
photography by instructor Ted Grudowski and black-and-white student
photos from 7:30 - 9 p.m. on March 30 in room T203 at the Factoria
campus. Tour the new photography lab and enjoy refreshments. Student
artwork will be displayed in the T building this spring and will be
changed every quarter. For more details, contact Jitka Wong at 564-2954
or via campus e-mail.
Athletics
Round-Up
BCC spring sports are gearing
up as winter sports wind down. The men's basketball team finished
the season at 13-15, their best record in six years. They finished
one game short of the play-offs, but have four players returning for
next year's team. The women’s basketball team finished 5-20 (and 4-12
in the league) this year. Second-year player Kailey Kirkpatrick was
named to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges
all-region second team. Baseball, softball and women's tennis kick
off in March, and all three teams should be very competitive this
year. The men’s baseball tournament starts today through Sunday at
BCC. For more details, contact coach Mark Yoshino at 564-2356. For
a complete schedule of upcoming events, click on “Athletics Calendar”
on the front page of the BCC website.

An International Conversation
International Programs is again offering its popular ”International
Conversation Partners Program” for spring quarter. The program matches
international students studying intensive English at BCC with English
or near-native fluency English speakers for cross-cultural conversation.
The time commitment is one hour per week, and partners meet at scheduled
group activities or according to their personal schedules. The Conversation
Partners Program is open to all BCC staff, faculty and students. Please
submit your application by April 13. For more information, please
call Kara McKinzie at 564-3074 or via campus e-mail.
Movers & Shakers
Congratulations to faculty and staff on these recent accomplishments:
?
Joan Baker, chair of BCC’s Diagnostic Ultrasound
program, is leading a delegation of sonographers to Australia over
spring break. The group will travel to Sydney and Melbourne to visit
medical facilities and discuss ultrasound training and practice
with their Australian counterparts. Joan was profiled in the February
26 issue of Radiology Today, a bi-weekly magazine for professionals
in the field of radiologic technology.
?
Linda Bennett, English and developmental education instructor, attended TESOL
2000, an international conference of Teachers of English to Speakers
of Other Languages, in St. Louis a few weeks ago. She was part of
a colloquium representing community colleges from across the nation
titled "Generation 1.5 at the Community College." Generation
1.5 represents American high school graduates who sustained interruptions
to literacy in native language at a critical time. They often have
unrealistic expectations about college-level work and their academic
ability. Discussion will continue at a future conference in Salt
Lake City.
?
“Anime Revealed” instructors Scott Bessho and
Terry Weston are finding great success with their popular new interdisciplinary
studies course. The class, and resulting student anime club, sponsored
a film festival last week and nearly 250 people attended the event.
The anime club was asked to show more films at the Eastside Japanese
Festival this fall, and Scott and Terry have been invited to host
a symposium as part of a local anime convention.
?
Jeff Cofer,
American Studies program chair and Phi Theta Kappa advisor, was
nominated to represent BCC in the Outstanding First-Year Student
Advocate Award competition sponsored by Houghton Mifflin Publishing.
Each year, Houghton Mifflin recognizes post-secondary educators
who work to improve the educational experience of first-year college
or university students.
?
Jamie Dye in
Information Resources and Liz
Buse in Student Programs will
spend much of the weekend attending the National Association of
Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) annual conference in Seattle.
Speakers will address the conference’s theme of “Perspectives from
the Leading Edge” in civil rights, social justice, partnerships
and technology. NASPA provides professional development, leadership
and policy development to college and university student affairs
administrators throughout the country.
