BCC Awarded Service Learning
Grant
BCC is one of ten community college nationwide
that received an $11,000 grant from the American Association of Community
Colleges. The grant will fund the integration of service learning
into the curriculum through the “Community Colleges Broadening Horizons
through Service Learning” program. Service learning combines classroom
instruction with community service and emphasizes critical, reflective
thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility. Toni Hartsfield,
director of Student Programs, and Shairose Gulamani, business instructor,
are working together to create a full-fledged service learning program
called “Serve, Learn and Lead.” BCC's program will provide professional
development for faculty and lead to the development of a Leadership/Citizenship
course. The goal of the project is to create six service learning
classes by fall quarter 2001 and partner with six community-based
organizations.
New Affiliation
Promotes Student Opportunities
Recently BCC recently became an “Affiliate Site” in the
new state-wide WorkSource system. The college joins many businesses
and community agencies that comprise the integrated career system
known as WorkSource Washington. As a result of these partnerships,
BCC students can expect to have increased opportunities for internships
and jobs as well as more user-friendly career services. Primary partners
in the Affiliate Site are the Career Center, Women's Center, Worker
Retraining and WorkFirst programs and Employment Security.
A Super
Staffer
Congratulations to Joan Miller, a secretary in the Science Division,
who was named the Employee of the Month for January by the classified
staff association. Joan has been with the college for nearly six years.
Joan’s colleagues praised her dedication and thoughtfulness. One co-worker
summed it up by saying, “Joan has contributed in many ways to making
the campus a better place to work.”
Meet the
Artists
Ever wonder where artists get
their inspiration? Would you like to know more about ceramic techniques?
Then stop by the “Artists Talk” on at 1:30 p.m. on February 8 to meet
ceramic artists Tip Toland and Bridget Young. The artists, who are
currently featured in the BCC Library Gallery, will give a presentation
and answer questions about their ideas, work and processes. The event,
which will be moderated by art history instructor Vicki Artimovich,
is open to all faculty and staff. For more details, contact Dale Lindman
at 564-2053 or via campus e-mail.
Movers & Shakers
Congratulations to BCC faculty
and staff on these recent accomplishments:
Science instructor
Mark Plunkett received the American Zoo and Aquarium
Association’s annual top education award for the “Beach Naturalist
Program” he developed on local beaches. The program, the largest in
the Northwest, recruits community members (including some BCC students)
to provide educational outreach on protecting the beaches of Puget
Sound.
Jeff Cofer, American Studies program chair and Phi
Theta Kappa (PTK) advisor, was asked to participate in PTK’s annual
awards process. Jeff will judge essays on scholarship, leadership
and service for the Illinois region. He was asked to participate after
winning the PTK Paragon Award for New Advisors in 1999 and 2000. Jeff
has been instrumental in helping to boost the BCC chapter’s ranking
over the last two years.

Vice President of Institutional Advancement
Kay Gough and Associate Dean of Telecommunications Mike Talbott were

at BCC and other two-year colleges. The article mentioned BCC’s enrollment
of over 20,000 students and the construction of Building R to ease
some of the recent growth. The report from the State Board of Community
and Technical Colleges showed that two-year colleges are accessible
and meeting the needs of students and the business community. You
