Legislators Visit BCC
State legislators from the BCC service area
met with President Floten and administrative, faculty, staff, trustee
and student members of the campus Legislative Committee today to discuss
higher education issues for the next legislative session. During a
breakfast meeting, the group discussed the impact of new initiatives,
the current political climate and the college’s capital and operating
budget requests. President Floten and Director of Institutional Research
Valerie Hodge gave an overview of BCC’s new community impact study
and several BCC programs that positively impact students’ lives.

Your BCC Memories for Founder’s Day
BCC will celebrate its 35th
anniversary on January 3. To recognize the event, the College Relations
staff is compiling information about BCC’s history for a Founder’s
Day web page. How has the college changed since you’ve been here?
We want to know! Please share your memories, photos and little-known
facts about the college with Kristin Graham in College Relations.
You can reach her at 564-3081 or via campus e-mail.
A Potential Traffic
Tangle for BCC Commuters
Thanks to all college faculty and staff
members who attended informational meetings last week about traffic
issues that may affect the college. The
City of Bellevue has proposed changes to
148th Avenue SE that could severely limit access to campus. The Bellevue
Transportation Commission will review the issue at a January 11 City
Council meeting. In the meantime, BCC continues to encourage alternatives
to single car commuting like carpooling, taking the bus or riding
a bicycle to campus. The good news is more than 200 new subsidized
bus passes were purchased this fall than in previous quarters.
Mentor
A Student
If you can spare an hour
or so a week, you can help a new student navigate his or her educational
experience at BCC. Faculty and staff mentors are needed next quarter
to provided assistance and encouragement to students. You and your
student will set your own schedule and decide if you’d like to maintain
contact by phone, e-mail or in-person meetings once a week. For more
information, contact Director of Student Programs Toni Hartsfield
at 564-6151 or via campus e-mail.
Panel
Promotes Service Learning
During Professional Development
Day on November 10, several faculty and staff members attended the
“Serve, Learn and Lead” panel session by BCC faculty members, Bellevue
city officials and local business people. The group reflected on the
merits of providing students with opportunities to gain work experience
through internships and incorporate community service learning into
curricula. Students get real-world experience - and the chance to
make new educational connections and give back to the community. For
more information, contact Cheryl Vermilyea at 564-2431or Shairose
Gulamani at 564-4083.
Employee of the Month
Congratulations to Lynda
Jensen, the classified staff association “Employee of the Month” for
November! Lynda is a program assistant in the Student Childcare
and Early Learning Center and has been at the college since 1990.
“Lynda embraces the mission of service to families and commits to
doing whatever it takes to make the program work,” said one of her
many fans. Co-workers praised her attention to detail, willingness
to help and supportive nature.
Spectacular
Students
BCC students continue to
make great strides! Here’s a look at some recent accomplishments:
?
All-Academic Team
- Coleen
De Leon and Sara Needleman-Carlton are BCC’s representatives to the
2001 All-Washington Academic Team, a prestigious competition that
recognizes outstanding academic and service contributions of community
college students. They will be honored in March by Governor Gary Locke
in a ceremony in Olympia to recognize top students. Coleen is active
in Phi Theta Kappa, the International Student Association and several
community organizations.
Sara is the president of
ASBCC student government and BCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, in
addition to volunteering for many community service projects. Congratulations
to these outstanding students!
?
BCC Athletes Recognized
-- Four BCC students were selected by the Northwest Athletic Association
of Community Colleges (NWAACC) for exceptional academic and athletic
achievements during fall quarter. Each season, NWAACC asks community
colleges to submit names of athletes as nominees for the All Academic
Student Athlete title. The nominees must have at least a 3.5 GPA and
have completed at least 36 credits. BCC had four students chosen,
more than any other school. Congratulations to students Sarah Nap,
Ambry Dornay, Theryn Henkel and Kentaro Matsuno.
?
DEC Students Show Community Spirit
- Students
involved in BCC's
Delta Epsilon Chi (DEC) club will
make a local family’s holiday celebrations a little merrier this year.
On December 20, DEC students will deliver bags of goodies to a family
in need identified by the Union Gospel Mission. As part of their
civic consciousness project, students solicited donations from Eastside
businesses and raised funds to purchase clothes, food, toys and presents
for the family. DEC is a national organization dedicated to providing
leadership, management, marketing and merchandising training to students.
Movers
& Shakers
?
Congratulations to speech instructor
Lee Buxton,
who was recently named in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.”
College students may nominate one teacher who made a significant impact
during their academic experience. He joins only 2.5% of American teachers
named to this list. Lee has been teaching at BCC since 1984 and received
the Margin of Excellence award in 1994.

When something looks fishy,
call upon Laurel
LaFever. A few
weeks ago
Laurel and a team of divers
dove into action to remove a stray gill net from the West Seattle
shore. After removing the 100 foot net, the group spent two
hours cutting free the marine life trapped in the net. This was Laurel’s
fourth gill net recovery operation. The Seattle Aquarium had plans
to remove the net, but Laurel’s group was one step ahead.
