Welcome
Back
Welcome back to the start
of BCC’s 34th academic year! Fall quarter got off to an
energizing start with Opening Week activities. After President Floten’s
welcome speech and presentation of our roadmap for the year ahead,
over 30 campus departments and divisions demonstrated recent accomplishments
and innovations during the festive “BCC Showcase.” College Issues
Day brought the campus together to discuss initiatives for the next
few years - under-prepared students, teaching and learning excellence,
and recruiting and retaining staff were listed as top priorities.
A new employee reception, orientations for new students, faculty and
staff, and a Friday afternoon barbecue rounded out the week’s activities.
Experience
the Rich Culture of Japan
On September 23-24, BCC will host the Eastside’s
third annual Nihon Matsuri. The fall cultural festival features stage
performances, booth exhibits, demonstrations and food stalls. Highlights
include a kimono exhibit, a demonstration of the techniques used to
dye kimonos, art exhibits and martial arts demonstrations. The event
is sponsored by the Eastside Nihon Matsuri Association and several
local organizations to promote an appreciation of Japanese culture
and art. This free event will be held in the gymnasium from 10 a.m.
- 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information
or a full schedule of events, contact Nora Lance in International
Student Services at 564-2330 or visit the association website at
www.enma.org.
Keeping
Up With Campus Operations
It’s been a busy summer
of construction and campus improvement projects for the Campus Operations
staff. Looking around the campus, you’ll notice several changes. The
department moved into the new Building K last week. Construction continues
on Building R, Building Q (the new family learning center) and the
loop road. With the implementation of a new smoking policy, 12 temporary
smoking shelters were constructed across campus. Permanent shelters
will be complete in October. New building and parking lots signs will
assist new students, staff and campus visitors. Campus beautification
and cleanliness continue with pressure washing, painting, team cleaning
and grounds improvements. Kudos to the entire staff for such impressive
results.
A Health
Resource for BCC Employees
Margaret Ann Van Bodegom,
BCC’s new Breast Health Resource Specialist, will be available to
staff and students for individual appointments, presentations, brown
bag luncheons and referrals. Through a grant from the Susan G. Komen
Foundation, Margaret Ann will promote the BCC BEARS (Breast Education
Awareness Referral and Support) program on campus. Contact her at
564-2481 or 564-2489 for more information.

these BCC programs:
?
International Conversation
Partners -
This program matches international students studying intensive English
at BCC with English, or near-native fluency English speakers, for
cross-cultural conversation. The commitment is one hour per week
and partners decide on their activities and meet according to their
personal schedules. The Conversation Partners Program is open to
all BCC students, faculty, and staff. Sign up by October 4 - and
share a mutual learning experience with a foreign student. For more
information, contact Kimberly Hildebrand in International Programs
at 564-3074 or via campus e-mail.
?
Volunteer Tutor Program
- Help students in Adult
Basic Education (ABE) succeed by providing support and encouragement.
The ABE program provides free programs to help adult learners improve
their reading, writing and math skills, as well as GED preparation
and English-As-A-Second-Language classes. You can make a real difference
by helping students reach their personal and professional goals.
Volunteers must commit 2-4 hours per week for a minimum of six months.
To get a volunteer orientation schedule or more information, contact
Tess HelesHunt at 564-2349 or via campus e-mail.
