Your Stuff at the “BCC Showcase”
Gear up for the new academic
year during Opening Week activities Sept.12-15. The “BCC Showcase”
debuts on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 9:30 a.m. to noon with a look at
new and innovative projects at BCC. Interactive, hands-on booths from
divisions and departments will give you a chance to learn about new
developments and projects throughout the college. Activities like
a trivia contest will inspire you learn more about each division and
give you the chance to earn prizes. This is a great opportunity to
brush up on exciting developments that enhance learning and reconnect
with your colleagues after the summer break. Stay tuned for more details.
If you have questions, contact Steve Ross at 564-2282 or by campus
e-mail.
The
Expanding Campus
The campus is buzzing with new construction
and improvement projects. On the north end of campus, 96 wells are
being drilled as the basis of a geo-thermal ground heating and cooling
system for Building R. Site work begins this week on the instructional
building. The new Building K will be complete at the end of the month,
and Campus Operations will move into their new home in early September.
Work on Building Q, the BCC-Costco early learning center, has started
in parking lot 9. Construction also commenced on the
loop road, which extends Snoqualmie River Road (west service road)
around the north side of the gym connecting to Kelsey Creek Road near
the entrance to parking lot 9. When the dust has cleared, BCC will
be better able to serve its growing student population.

Target Fall Quarter Enrollment
Have you spotted a BCC ad
on the back of a Metro bus, in the newspaper or on the Web? If so,
you’re seeing the efforts of a fall enrollment advertising campaign
that began in July and runs through early September. You can catch
the new ads in the Eastside Journal, Mirror, Seattle Times
website or on several Eastside buses. The goal of the campaign is
to match or exceed last year’s enrollment. Kudos to the Enrollment
Services staff, who are putting in lots of extra time and energy to
handle phone calls and questions during the enrollment push.

Honors for Two BCC Staffers
Congratulations to Cindy
Boekhoff, assistant financial aid director, and Joan Miller, secretary
in the Science Division, who received the Exemplary Staff Award from
the Staff Training Association for Technical and Community Colleges
(STTACC). They were recognized for excellence in job performance and
commitment to professional development and the goals of higher education.
Ordinarily, one person from each of four state regions is selected.
In this region, Cindy and Joan were such outstanding candidates that
they both were honored at the annual STTACC conference in Spokane
last week.
Events
to Entice
Continuing Education has
developed a new program called “Spectacular Events” to offer community-based
events to the public. Single-day or extended events this fall include
trips to the Intiman Theater, Seattle Symphony, Pacific NW Ballet,
an Eastern Washington winery tour and a visit to Senior Expo 2000.
Spectacular Events will offer approximately 15 events per quarter,
and all include an educational component like a lecture or backstage
tour. For more information, contact program director Don Christensen
at 564-2870 or via campus e-mail.
Giving
Children A Head Start
Low-income parents who currently
work or are enrolled in school now can enroll their children in BCC’s
Head Start program for fall quarter. The federally-funded Head Start
program provides excellent preschool education for 3- and 4-year-olds
in addition to health screenings, daily meals and parent education.
Parents can take advantage of extended hours (Monday to Friday from
6:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and year-round daycare service starting this
fall. If you know someone who could benefit from this program, please
pass on the information or contact Sylvia Hobbs at 564-2308 or via
campus e-mail. You may learn more about the BCC Head Start program
at www.bcc.ctc.edu/parent-ed/HeadStart.html.
Kudos to Campus Ops.
Many of you shared e-mail about how lovely
our campus has been this spring and summer.
Grounds manager John Carroll and his crew
are still watering and maintaining garden areas. In the spirit
of conservation, several lawns and garden areas on the campus perimeter
are allowed to be dormant until fall rains restore them. Just
a friendly reminder that because of the recent heat wave, these drier
areas are vulnerable to lit cigarettes, matches or other flames and
sparks. Thanks again to all our campus caretakers.

Off the Press
The 2000-01student handbook
and fall class schedules are now available. The student handbook,
a valuable resource for students and staff, details information about
student programs, activities and campus policies. You may have noticed
a change in the fall schedule. The quarterly schedule is now two separate
publications -- credit and continuing education -- to better meet
the needs of the diverse student populations. Both schedules debuted
with bright colors and a cleaner design inside and out.
Kicking
Off the Fall Season
BCC athletic teams are preparing
for the fall season with team try-outs and practices this month. The
soccer, volleyball and cross-country teams currently are recruiting
new athletes. Interested students can call the BCC Athletics office
at 564-2351 for more information. The Athletics Department welcomes
new coaches Ray Butler (women’s soccer) and Fred Thompson (men’s soccer)
who bring their experience and talents to an exciting season ahead.

Congratulations to the NWCET for receiving
prestigious news coverage last month. The NWCET was mentioned in a
July 16 Washington Post
article on the growth and evaluation of high-tech certification programs.
Copies of the article are available by calling the NWCET at 564-4215.
The success of BCC’s WorkFirst
program was included in an Eastside

Richard Larsen on August 5. Larsen mentions the strength of community
partnerships and the introduction of a new office occupations program
that offers computer and software certification training to low-income
parents.
Congratulations are in order
for Michael Saunders, archivist for the Puget Sound Regional Branch
of the Washington State Archives located in Building N. He just received
the Willard Jue Memorial Award from the Association of King County
