A True Pathfinder
Congratulations to President Floten, who received the Pathfinder
Award from the Washington Research Council in June. This award recognizes
the outstanding contributions of non-elected public administrators
in our state. President Floten was honored for her vision and innovation
in establishing the NorthWest Center for Emerging Technologies. In
nominating her for this prestigious community award, Ross Jacobson
and Sarah Langton of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce stated, “Jean
Floten is a visionary thinker who has definitely blazed a trail to
new horizons with the creation of the NWCET.”
News from
the Board of Trustees
During their June 28 meeting, the BCC Board
of Trustees adopted the college's annual budget at $52.3 million,
based on 8,100 FTE students for the coming year. They approved a revised
smoking policy, which limits smoking and other tobacco use to designated
locations outside campus courtyards. They also evaluated President
Floten and gave her outstanding ratings in all areas and renewed her
contract for another three years. J.C. “Dell” Jackson is the
new board chair, with Lee Kraft as vice chair for the coming year.
Orientation Jump Starts
Student Success
The Office of Instruction is organizing a
three-day orientation for new students to ease the transition to college
and help promote student success. The pilot program is targeted toward
recent high school grads in an effort to reduce attrition among first-year
students. On July 24-26, students will get a comprehensive introduction
to BCC while earning their first two credits toward an Associate degree.
They will tour the campus, learn about student resources, complete
assessment tests, and meet with advisors and faculty members. For
more information, contact Donna Sharpe via campus e-mail.
Campus Ops - On the Move
As BCC prepares for the reconstruction of
Building K, the Campus Operations staff is temporarily being relocated
on campus. You can now find the Capital Projects and Material Resources
staff in room L100D and Security and the remainder of the Campus Operations
staff in room C120. The warehouse, central stores and mail services
will stay in the west side of Building K until the end of the month.
All phone numbers and services remain unchanged (note the closure
of the central stores at noon on July 14 to prepare for the move).
Calling All BCC Alums
The BCC Alumni Association is seeking alumni
interested in serving on the Alumni Association Board. The Board’s
goal is to increase membership as part of a revitalization of the
alumni association. For more details, contact Vice President of Institutional
Advancement Steve Ross at 564-2282 or via campus e-mail.
Employee of the Month
Congratulations to Gerry Becker, the classified
staff association’s Employee of the Month for June! Gerry, who recently
retired after 13 years at BCC, was a credentials evaluator in Enrollment
Services. Co-workers appreciated her knowledge, patience and caring
nature. One colleague raved, “Gerry is an extremely hard worker who
works tirelessly at her job. She is kind and considerate to the students
and her co-workers.”
