E2E Institute Hosts Summer Institute For Faculty
On June 13 - 14, the NWCET’s Educator-to-Educator (E2E) Institute will host the “Microsoft Mentor Institute” for faculty members from the state’s 33 community and technical colleges. The Microsoft Mentor Program offers a flexible model allowing faculty to develop and enhance their computer usage skills with an emphasis on solving educational problems rather than focusing on various software features. After the institute, faculty mentors will return to their home colleges to train and support their peers. For more information, contact Duncan Burgess, E2E Director, at 564-4224 or visit www.nwcet.org/E2E on the Web.

Excellence in Action
Please mark your calendars to attend the Margin of Excellence awards ceremony at 3 p.m. on May 18 in the Carlson Theatre. Show your support for our outstanding faculty and classified staff. This year’s award recipients are: Jim Ellinger, Jerrie Kennedy (full-time faculty award), Nancy Eichner (part-time faculty award), Michelle Chavez and Carol Jones-Watkins (classified staff award).

Getting A Head Start
BCC’s Head Start program now is taking fall enrollments and will be open year-round after the completion of the new child care center next year. Fall hours are 6:45 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. The federally-funded Head Start program provides a full-day child development program for three- and four-year-olds from low-income families. Children receive nutritious meals and health services including developmental and medical screenings. Parenting groups and classes, health and nutrition education, and training and employment support services are available to parents. Stop by A157 or call 564-2308 for more information or an application.

An Award-Winning Partnership
BCC’s English-As-A-Second-Language (ESL) program was recently recognized for its successful partnership with Mercer Island’s Covenant Shores Nursing Home, which just won the social responsibility award from Washington State Housing Services for the Aging. Through a grant project which started in January, ESL classes are available to non-native speaking employees to improve their communication and increase understanding of job responsibilities, rights and safety procedures. Nursing home employees also may visit the BCC campus to use the Basic Skills Lab. Congratulations to BCC’s ESL faculty and staff members for their role in this successful partnership.

Math Mania
BCC’s Math Department hosted the annual state community college math retreat in Wenatchee in early May. Nearly 250 instructors from across the state gathered to exchange curriculum ideas, attend presentations on a variety of math-related topics and share information. BCC instructor Jennifer Laveglia accepted an award on behalf of BCC mathletes, who again placed first in the state at the 1999-2000 American Mathematical Association of Two-Year College Colleges math competition.

Chart Topper
KBCS raised $43,000 from listeners during its one-week spring pledge drive --  the most amount ever raised during a pledge drive. The funds will be used for general operation and equipment repair. There's still time to make a donation. Contact KBCS at 564-2424.

Jazz Band Hits High Notes in Germany
Hal Sherman and the BCC Jazz Band recently returned from a spring tour in Germany. The band played to enthusiastic crowds in Berlin at Quasimodo’s Jazz Club and the Willie Brandt Haus. If you haven’t seen the band perform live, don’t despair. You can catch them at the spring invitational at 7:30 p.m. on May 24 in the Carlson Theatre. The concert features performances by the BCC Jazz Band and guest bands from Lindbergh and Edmonds-Woodway high schools. For only $5, enjoy a great evening of big band jazz from this talented group.

A  Model Project
Students in Media 230 “Web Design and Development” are tackling a project that many Web professionals face every day - to drive traffic to a website.  Working in teams to get real-world experience, the media students used their HTML, streaming media and design skills to create websites under the domain name of BCCMedia.com (www.bccmedia.com). They get daily statistics about  the site, which has shown steady traffic growth to about 100 visitors per day, and make changes based on visitor comments. This valuable, real-life project is helping prepare students for high-demand Web jobs while creating an online library of information for future BCC media students.

In the News
It’s been a great month for BCC news coverage and BCC science programs lead the way. Yesterday’s Eastside Journal featured a recap of the Stevenson Elementary science extravaganza last week. BCC science instructors gave fun, interactive demonstrations in chemistry, earth science, physics and biology during the Young Scientists Celebration. You can read the story at: http://www.eastsidejournal.com/sited/retr_story.pl/19577

Meteorology instructor Kent Short was interviewed by the Eastside Business Journal today for a story about BCC’s weather station. And astronomy instructor Art Goss got the thumbs-up from the Seattle Times as a “gutsy astronomy professor” who countered views that the continent would be destroyed by polar ice caps during a planetary alignment on May 5.

The recent Internet Physics Olympiad that was hosted by BCC on April 27 was covered by the Seattle PI and the Eastside Journal. You can read the articles online at:

In other news, Arts 2000 Director Cheryll Leo-Gwin was the subject of a May 6 Seattle PI article on art against racism. The story highlights her “Bridge to Brotherhood” mural at NE 164th Street and Redmond Way in Redmond. See the article online at: http://www.seattlep-i.com/visualart/hart06.shtml

BCC’s new online four-year business degree, in partnership with Edmonds Community College and Washington State University, was mentioned in the Seattle Times and Eastside Journal. Last - but certainly not least - the Margin of Excellence award winners were mentioned in the Eastside Journal on May 1.

Off the Vine
The other “love bug” (not that nasty computer virus) struck for one Printing Services’ staff member a few weeks ago. Production assistant Illeny Maaza and her fiance Matthew got married on May 1 and honeymooned on the island of Kauai. Congratulations to the newly-married, newly-tanned couple!

Congratulations are also in order for Campus Operations’ Terri Halsey. This cake-maker extraordinaire won three top awards at the Washington State Cake and Sugar Arts show in April. Terri even beat out professional cake makers, judges and instructors from the Northwest, snagging the most awards at the competition!
